Hertz —

A few years ago I frequently travelled back and forth from my home to the Washingon DC area, and Hertz was the car rental place for me every time I arrived there. But, in all honesty I have to admit to having known someone who worked there.  After they found a new job, I also admit to finding a new car rental service as the prices at Hertz were far more than many other car rental places anywhere that I travelled.

Recently I had the opportunity to travel to San Diego, California and shock and surprise - Hertz car rental was actually the least expensive (and quite reasonable) car rental for our family of four.  We require at the least a midsize car due to strollers, suitcases, car seats and children.

After arriving in San Diego 8 hours late due to storms in Houston, we arrived to find that Hertz did indeed still have our reservation (yes I have arrived late at other counters to find that my reservation wasn't held).  However, it was approximately 11:30 pm so there was only one customer service person at the counter and one on security.

The good things about my experience with Hertz:

  • a car was still available even after arriving late and late at night
  • we received a free upgrade -- I think after taking one look at our bedraggled appearance and it being almost 3 am our time he took pity
  • the price for a week with a Nissan Murano = $175.00 including taxes.
The bad things about my experience with Hertz:
  • the seating area to wait for customer service was dirty and all the way over on the other side of the building
  • the electronic kiosk didn't work so we had to wait in line even though the sign says if you made your reservation with Hotwire etc use the kiosk.
  • since there was only one person working we had to "figure" the car out at Enterprise they usually take a minute to run you through where things are and how to use them
Overall, we got in, we got out. We were easily processed when we returned our car and the shuttle service was timely and courteous.  The cars available are excellent and while I would not purchase a Nissan Murano I was much happier with it than the smaller car that our reservation was for.  While the "bad things" seem like they aren't important I admit that the cleanliness with two small children running around and wanting to touch everything was a concern as well as security not even telling us that our lights weren't on when he checked us through the lot. (Ours come on automatically so it's hard to remember).

Hertz is just too full of ups and downs both with pricing and customer service to be anything more than average. But they did score points with me this trip and I hope they will again.

I remember when they emphasized service over price. They used to cost more but you almost always got a decent car and were in and out the door quickly.

I've never had a chance to rent from Hertz before. Every time I was in the market for a rental car, they were never even close to the cheapest.
