Most HelpfulQuick View: I have a 10 year old Jack Russell Terrier who hates taking pills. I have suffered through sticking them down his throat, sneaking them to him in food (only to have him spit them out), and crushing them. At last, I can protect Mickey from heartworm year round with chewable preventative medication...

Most HelpfulMy vet suggested that I give my two Shih-poo puppies Heartgard as a preventative measure against heartworm. Well, like anyone who treats their dogs like their kids, I did my due diligence. Just so you all know:
Most veterinarians will recommend giving a daily or monthly pill to prevent heartworms,...

After having nursed my inlaw's dog through heartworm treatment, I will never let my dogs go without heartworm pills. The treatment is hard on even a young dog, and elderly dogs really suffer. (Plus it's expensive, and it's NOT optional. Heartworms are slow killers, but killers nonetheless.)
Thank God for Heartgard making it easy!
The brick-shaped chewables are soft and smell like treats. My dogs will actually do tricks to earn them. The size of the doses ranges from about an inch long for the little dogs to about an inch and a half for the biggest. If you have a dog larger than 100lbs (like I do)...

I'll never forget my first "introduction" to Heartguard many years ago, in the reception area of our veterinarian's office. On the counter, for all to see, was a clear glass jar. The contents inside the jar were a "piece of meat" entangled with "spaghetti-like" strands. In actuality, it was the preserved heart of an unfortunate dog who had contracted heartworm! What I saw here was so GROSS! I remember thinking to myself that there was no way any dog would be able to function with a heart that was literally being suffocated by so many worms! Needless to say, my dogs have always been on Heartguard....
review »My bulldog loves the chewables..they must take like treats. She is an 8-month old puppy that can tell when you try to give her any sort of pill, but since these are chewable, we just tell her they are treats and down it goes!
Heartgard is a monthly item that needs to be given to your dog to prevent heart worms.
This is a very important item in sustaining your dog's health. It comes in 6-month supply packages and is beefy flavor; therefore, making it very appealing to your dog. My dog just gobbles these right up.
I feel very confident in this item. Have owned 3 dogs. My 2 dogs in the past lived for 13 & 14 years. I always gave them vitamins and Heartgard.
I plan to follow the same routine with my now 16 month old American Staffordshire Terrior. He is my ~baby~ and will only give him the best to keep him healthy....
review »I have given my dogs heartguard for years and I never buy it from the Vet. They are so overpriced. I found a place on line where it is so much more reasonable and with 4 dogs i have to watch my pennies.
I had two dogs get heartworms many, many years ago and was able to save both of them but that is not an experience I would want to go thru again.

Heartguard is a simple, easy way to protect your pet from heartworm, and my dog LOVES them! I have to hide the package from him so he doesn't eat the whole thing. This is the only "medicine" I give hime that I don't have to hide in a pill pocket or some kind of food to get him to take it.
