With the boys gone this week, I check out the freezor. Apparently, the Healthy Choice Roasted Chicken Dinner did not reach and grab the boys.

Oh well. I had a good dinner this evening.

I think that rule about the size of a card deck on the meat has been cut to half a card deck, because that's the size of the chicken in this meal. The box says it's 20% of the meat on the pyramid for the day, I guess you save up with this choice.

The chicken was good but a little tough. I could cut it with a fork if I tried hard, but I think of roasted chicken as a little more tender. But, the chicken was good overall.

There sure weren't many mashed potatoes - perhaps 1/4 cup at best. They were fine. Just general basic mashed potatoes frozen and heated.

That homestyle sauce was kind of thin gravy over the meat and potatoes. The flavor was good on that. There were a couple of mushrooms but not many. Don't let the picture fool you on the box. If you don't care much for mushrooms, then don't rule out this meal.

The peas and carrots probably put my boys off. Those were fine. The peas were small but not as sweet as I would expect for smaller peas. The little carrot squares put me to mind of public school means but were smaller cut and crisper - thank goodness.

I liked that dessert, which I would have sure sworn was apple crisp. Now, I look at the box while making photos, and I had peach dessert. I swear. You sure couldn't tell it by me. There wasn't much fruit in there, and it was covered with oatmeal and sauce, and I'd have marked down apples if asked. Oh well. I like apples and peaches. I will take their word for it that those few bites of fruit were peach. And, I guess that oatmeal is good for a lot of things they say.

All in all, this was a good meal. It didn't really fill me up though. I guess 250 calories for dinner doesn't cut it for me (or most people). So, then I ate chips while watching TV which kind of defeated the healthy meal. I would suggest this as better for lunch at work or something. I think it would do me mid-day but not at 6 p.m. after working in the yard.

I've eaten (and reviewed) a LOT of these Healthy Choice babies! They are never enough for a whole meal so I always add a scoop of cottage cheese or chopped tomato in a side dish, maybe a piece of whole grain toast. I frankly wish they would leave those dumb desserts off. The reason the meat and other foods are so meager is to make up for the space and calories needed for the dumb dessert. And the reason the dumb dessert being there is to save money and enhance profits by being able to offer you less of the REAL food. All of which means that the dessert may be dumb but SOMEBODY isn't at Healthy Choice!

It was probably apples. Apples and apple juice appear almost everywhere now, it seems. Nice review, Cyndi!
