Well if you really are active you should take a hard look at your eating habits.  Chances are you're consuming too many calories for your activity level.

Sigh! [I've considered a body shop complete with saws, torches, etc.  LOL]

As we age, it is harder and harder to shed pounds. Experts say, we have to re-set our metabolism. If it was that easy we would all be fit and trim. Good luck with that!

First, please get your thyroid checked. I gained weight years ago seemingly out of the blue. I had not changed anything but suddenly I went from 115 pounds to 136. Nothing worked. I exercised, dieted, did everything right but the weight just went up. I complained to my doctor about it and he blew me off at first but then I had funny heart palpitations and my hair was falling out at an alarming rate. Turns out I had an under active thyroid. I was put on thyroid hormone to replace what my thyroid was not making and the weight came off easily.

I now watch my eating closely, eat a low fat diet, and exercise. And I have my thyroid checked every six months,. My medication has been changed several times over the years and I am getting to the point where I KNOW when I need more because I suddenly gain weight for nothing.

If your thyroid is OK, you should keep a food journal (Actually you should no matter what. www.Sparkpeople.com is free. You should journal everything you eat and drink and how much. You may be surprised at how many calories you're taking in without realizing it. Being active is key but you can only burn so many calories and the rest turns to fat. Seeing exactly how much you eat will definitely give you some idea if you are mistakenly eating the wrong foods. It would also actually help your doctor when you ask for a thyroid test. Many blow us off saying we need to eat less. If you have your food journal and can show the doctor that you are eating a somewhat limited diet and still gaining weight or unable to lose, he or she may take the situation seriously.

Good luck!

Besides watching what you eat, have you been doing the same exercise every day? If so, switch it up and add 2-3 days of strength training in also. The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn :-) Good luck!
