I don't smoke, but a lot of people that I care about do smoke or have smoked in the past. What products/websites/ideas work...and what hasn't worked for you or a loved one?

I can tell you what doesnt work, bugging them everyday about how they should quit.  In my experience, people just get annoyed everytime someone tells them they should quit and why.  As with any addiction, the first step is them admitting they want help.  I had a CW who smoked like crazy then one day told us she was quitting.

Now, once the person says they are quitting for sure, it is good to help by yelling at them whenever they even think about it!  And congratulating them every day they don't smoke.  My MIL quit smoking around our wedding date and reminds us all the time that she's not been smoking since we got married.  She even had a program on her computer that she provided data too (how much she USED to smoke, when she quit, etc) and the program was always up showing all these facts including how many days she has added to her life since she quit, how much money she has saved since she quit.  I thought that was really cool and motivational.

The only other way I can think of to help is to not give in to your friends when they want to go to the smoking section!  Too many people are willing to sit in smoking sections just to please their friends, I'm not, I say Non-smoking right away when I walk in.  I also stopped going outside with my friends when they want to smoke.  Why should I stand out in the cold every 30 mins b/c you HAVE to smoke?  I don't really hang out with anyone who smokes anymore, their loss not mine :)

I wish I had the answer, Katrena! I have an aunt that quit smoking a few years ago. I think the only reason she quit when she did was because of my grandfather's death. My grandfather died of diabetes.

If we can just get my cousin (my aunt's daughter) to stop smoking, would be wonderful. My cousin did NOT stop smoking when she was pregnant with her three children. Thank the Lord the children were not harmed when they were born.

You would think the high prices of cigarettes nowadays would detour people to stop smoking. I guess with any kind of addiction it has to be that persons decision to stop smoking.

I agree with vivasuzi that bugging them everyday to quit smoking doesn't help, they just get mad at you. I think it is a great idea to congratulate them everyday that they do not smoking.

If you've seen my review and discussion board on The Great American Smoke-Out, you'd know that I deal with this issue, too. I wish I knew what to do to get my husband to quit. I've never smoked the things and they still seem to plague my life!

There's some serious side effects of those pills though, including thoughts of suicide.

Yeah, I'd rather kill myself than stop smoking. d;-)

I rather enjoy smoking, myself, and will probably never stop until I stop doing everything else.

You guys are posting some thoughtful responses. I've seen gum, pills, hyponsis, patches, these things to inhale that sort of look like cigarettes, and lots of other stuff out there for people to try. I've also known people who have stopped cold turkey, so to speak. Have any of you guys looking at these tried any of these products with good or bad results? Have cigarette prices affected that habit for any of you who smoke?

Several people that I know found that they gained weight when they stopped smoking. Have any of you experienced this? When people stop smoking, congestion in the lungs actually increases initially (and then gets better later)--has that turned any of you back to smoking?

I know one person mentioned to me that when she chewed gum specially designed to help people to stop smoking that she got hiccups. Quite a few of my cancer patients have been on the patch when they've come into the hospital for treatment, but I have no idea if they went back to smoking when they got home.

I don't think you're alone, DUISparky. I know of someone who told his doctor that he knew more old smokers than old doctors. However, I've also cared for a lot of patients with cancer in the lung, mouth and neck areas, and it's rough to see.

Hi.

until a few days ago I used to smoke 2 packs a day.
I have tried, like many others, to quit for years. I have tried everything in the market, gums, paches, even chantix. However one day my friend advise me a Wellbutrin SR. I find it in a shop called

realhealthcenter.com

Check it out now!

Due to it after a while I gave up to smoke. And does not smoke until now.

If you're think about quitting smoking, you're in for a tough battle. If you've tried to quit with no success yet, then you know exactly what I'm talking about. To quit smoking successfully, it helps if you understand why you're so addicted, and the process that got you there.

As if cigarettes aren't addicting enough, the big tobacco companies spend billions of dollars devising ways to keep you addicted. You see, they want you to stay and bring your friends along too. With some of the diabolacle ways that tobacco companies get and keep you addicted to their drug, they make the Mexican drug cartels look like ice cream salesmen! I have a blog where I post stuff I've researched about how they do this:

http://tobacco-addiction.blogspot.com/

Once you know how you've been duped into smoking by these companies, you'll be so ****** that you'll want to quit with a passion!

wow I can't see how Chantix can't work I started it three weeks ago .. its a miracle drug I tell u that I was a two pk a day smoker Marlboro 100s red .. lord I got anxioius if I was down to two packs in the house .. on day I told my huband to pick me up some smokes coming home from work .. well let me say ok I had started the Cantix I kept waiting for it to work to where I didn't feel like smoking my son had giving it a shot but it made him to nausus well he gave me what he had and I started it like with the .5 a day and do on I started the full dose morning and night I swear I was still waiting .. well get back to the point now asked hubby to bring me home a carton he got home said omg these were 50 bucks I said WHAT I got so upset I said baby this is the last carton u will ever buy me I tell u that .. well ok I started with decressing my smokes every day for about a week first it was down to a pack a day I timed them thoughout the day to last . . then down to like 18 cigs a day and so on I got to one smoke a day I had finally started to feel the chantix .. I didn't want to smokes as much In trying to decrease my smoking I avoided all my triggers I would not smoke after eating .. or after I put on my make up .. or talking on the phone the big one for me was the morning smoke when I got up in the morning I was darn near a chain smoker trying to catch up for all the smoke I missed at night .. real bad I would wake up to go potty at night and hell would go in and smoke a cig thats how bad I was .. well anyway I was down to one cig a day for about three days then I said to myself one cig its not even feeling like u smoke because of the chantix but I still liked the feeling of the warm smoke filling my lungs the biggest and hardest habit to break I believe .. well I just put it in my mind that smoking was NOT and option and that I had quit smoking I was no a none smoker .. u know my kids had been on me for years to quit begged me to quit , my grandson thats five hated it and my 11 year old grandgirl hated it but both her parents smoke though they keep trying to quit .. omg  taked my my daughter last night she said she paid 6 bucks for a pack of smokes well no more for me not wasting that damn money on cigs ever again.. well I had a lot to quit smoking for my family was number one... My husband has been quit seven years now he used the patch he said it was hard .. I've tried the patch three or four times I always wind up smoking on the patch I dont' think I could ever get to much nicotien I love the stuff .. well back to my quit .. ok I said no more will u ever buy me well after I got to the one smoke a day one morning I got up and said ok this day u will NOt smoke lord the first morning was was the kicker ok if I had the one in the morning I could go the rest of the day and be fine I did that for two days as I said the third day I didn't plan my quit I let my quit date choose me .. that day I said ok no more smoking ever I'm done kaput nada .. well that morning was a bit much but it let up and I did fine the rest of the day well ok the next morning again rough but the Chantix made it much easier for me if I had been cold turkey I doubt I would have made it I was anxious almost had a panic attack whenever I tried to not smoke but that first day I quit completely well ok my chest did get tight and felt like my chest was going to implode on itself if I didn't have a smoke but my will was strong .. I was finshed really finished I thought of all I could do with the huge money I was going to save a month as well as not winding up with Copd and dying early like all the females in my family they all died from it or smoking related deaths I always knew one day I would have to quit I also decided there is no good time to guit .. oh another trigger I found was stress one of the biggist well stress is low at my house but my grandson can push all my buttons and really get me going lol and I found that when was watching him hes five now that I was getting anxious and wanting to smoke but mind u the Chantix made it possible for me to say NO ..and live with the slight uncomforrableness .. I got thur them and then the hotwater heater started leaking well I'm putting towels there but it not that bad yet but I stressed over that and I did not smoke even though I thought if it it was NOT overwhelming desire to smoke .. I have pretty much tested all my triggers now .. I know I CAN get though them and I Have chatix to thank for that .. well I've been smoke free for 14 days now and I can get up in the morning and harldy think of a cigerette .. I am amazed I always thought I could NEVER quit I was someone that would say I love smoking all I need is my smoking .. but in the back of my mind I know I Had to .. one other thing else helped me and that was my husband didn't smoke anymore I said if he can do it so can I .. also I want to set an example for my grandkids my grandson is so proud of me .. he used to always tell me to go smoke in the garage .... also another thing helped me well my mother in law died of lung cancer at 84 even though she had stopped smoking fourty years proior but I said well she lived to be 84 had she not quit she would have most likely died of a smoking illness in her 60s I took a class in College one time that said if u didn't quit smoking that u the average u live to if your a woman is 65 thats how old my grandma was when she died of COPD .. I watched her get frail and helpless could not have enough breath to walk to the bathroom  and I still smoked  I've had three strokes I still smokes I feel so good right now I'm doing two mile day on my treadmill at three miles an hour I used to be only to go a mile at 2.5 mile an hour for just a little bit now I have energy to spare ..and I'm not huffing and puffing .. my husband told me I smell so much better my son used to hate to hug me because he said I smelled like one big cigerette ..now I dont' have to kiss my grandkids smelling like an ashtray .. so many wonderful things await u if u quit .. I can't say enough about Chatix how good it is .. but u have to want to really try but its nothing like trying to do it cold turkey ... I tell every smoker I know to try it .. also I'm bi polar and have ADHD I'm on Adderall and a host of other phyc meds I'm not moody .. I'm sleeping fine I have NO dreams at all .. I'm not gaining weight but I do use the treadmill everyday .. I've not lost my mind  I know I read all the horror stories to but I'm three weeks in and no I'm fine I think I'm going to try chantix for six months I've heard the success rate is better but my dr said three months is really only what I need but she said we'll see I have no problem keeping u on them for six months but I don't think its neccessary .. so I'll see .. I'm was such  a heavy smoker I am afraid to even go off the Chantix if they told me I would have to take it the rest of my life I would do that . anyone that reads thing I tell them go for the Chantix its worked miracles for me .. but in the end u have to want to quit as well .. but I've truly wanted to before and nothing has worked before now I found that I still wanted to smoke on the chantix but if I just gave it a bit of effort I could get though the worst of it .. most being the first few days of quit I suggest that u do what I did to and not smoke at your triggers wait until there over .. and put your smokes in the back of the house so u have to get up and go all the way to pick one up smoke outside don't smoke in your chair that u smoke in all the time .. these helped me when I got to the NO smoking time .. if u don't get it within the 8th day keep trying u can make it work I think I smoke ten days or 11 not sure but as I said I let the smoke date pick me ..and keep saying to yourself smoking is not an option .. my kids and husband are so proud of me I don't want them to be disappoited I will Never touch the things again ever well thanks for reading my story if u find it online hope it helps u .. I just recently wrote an article about electronic cigarettes.  They're said to really help people.  If you'd like more information, I'd be happy to send you the link.

My husband tried Chantix, and it made me feel spacey and lightheaded.  He's STILL smoking.  It's such a tough habit to break.

I have tried the patch, gum, lolly pops, laser treatment, chantix and even cold turkey. I've tried cutting back, waiting longer, timing myself but nothing works. Oh I forgot even wellbutrin. I must admit chantix did help as I was down to around 6 cigs a day but it made me very depressed so I had to stop taking this. It cost me $300.00 for the laser treatment but it made me so nervous it felt worst then when I quit cold turkey. Honestly I want to quit but nothing out there helps me. I have never tried the electronic cigarettes. I'll have to check this out. Thanks for this info.

I'll be smoke free for 7 years July 23rd my daughter birthday.  You have to want to quit and never stop trying to quit.  It took me 3 times and I finally did it.  It's great to have lots of support.  My daughter gave me a high five everyday I didn't smoke, my husband gave me extra money to buy something special for myself, my family didn't let me give up.

I think it's great that you were able to stop smoking. I'm assuming you quit cold turkey. You would think since I'm the only smoker in my family that it would be easier. I think the fact that they are always telling me to quit doesn't help, I sound like a child but I believe that to be true. I quit for 3 months in 2004 and in a moment of weakness I started again. Everytime I hear of someone quitting it gives me hope that I can do it to. Just need more will power and less stress in my life. Congrats to you.

It sounds like your family really rallied behind you in your efforts to quit smoking. I can only imagine how hard it would be to quit if someone else in the house also smoked but was not inclined to quit.

I managed to cut down to 1/2 a pack a day by getting some of my nicotine from gum and lozenges. I was finally able to cut out tobacco altogether by adding an electronic cigarette with the high nicotine cartridges.  These three sources give me enough nicotine to be able to concentrate, reason, and remember, and I haven't gained any weight!  The wheezing and coughing have gone away altogether.  I have no cravings for tobacco cigarettes any more.  I tried one a few months ago and stopped after a couple of puffs.  It tasted terrible!

Cold turkey. Just get it over with.

Two weeks down here and no slips.

Of course, I haven't smiled or enjoyed anything since I quit. But, oh well, I don't smoke. I suppose I could celebrate that, but I'd rather just go back to sleep and hope the day is over soon.

Oh yeah. The wt question. Jeans won't quite zip now. So - I suppose I could treat myself to fat clothes shopping trip. Now, that sounds like great fun.

While smoking IS a physical addiction, it can be quit.  My dad did it.  My mother never did, although she tried many, many times.   I can only speak to it as a non-smoker (actually, I quit when I was 12, although I've had the occasional smoke on a couple of occasions since then), but seems to me that, like most anything else, a person's ability to quit is directly proportional to thier desire to quit.  Most people I know who quit successfully did it cold turkey.

I used a combonation of chantix and nicotine patch.  The nly thing I can say to someone who is quitting.

You have to be ready.  If you aren't ready it won't happen.

Again you have to be ready.  I smoked for 15 years and I am only 28 so do the math HA!

Chantix with the nicotine patch worked, however it took me getting mad at myself and yelling at me in the mirror and changing habits etc to be able to do it.

DO IT FOR YOU!  no one else, at the end of the day no one pays your bills and since the people here are so kind I am willing to wager dollars to doughnuts that someone loves you.  Don't do it for them, do it so you can be there for them!

GOOD LUCK! peace love joy and all that :-)

I agree with others, nagging a smoker does not help.
