I have a dilemna that I have not been able to solve. I have searched the internet, I have asked doctors, holistic practitioners & friends that I know.  No one can give me an answer, other than genetics.  They just tell me not to worry and that I'm lucky....but I want to know WHY.  I do take a multi-vitamin, a calcium supplement and a few herbal supplements.  But it's been this way even when I went years without taking anything.

Why is my hair getting thicker as I get older?  I have to thin it every 4-6 weeks.  I do this myself, else I'd spend a fortune at hair cutting places.  I don't think it's anything bad. It gets so heavy (esp. in summer) that sometimes I get headaches.  My mom says my scalp would split as a small child.

I do have one sister who lost all her hair due to stress when she was in the military overseas. My mother's hair is fairly normal, maybe it was my dad? I lost him at an early age though, so I don't know...

Your comments/educated guesses are welcome.

I have no idea why your hair is getting thicker, but I would say one thing...be thankful ... because it could be the other way around.  My hair has always been thin and fine and as I age, it continues to thin.  I would die for a thick head of hair and therefore, I consider you blessed.!!!  Enjoy all the great things you can do with it.

My sister is having a similar thing happen, she's finding her hair to be getting fuller / thicker or just growing more the older she gets. She's worn her hair short most of her life and now finds she has to have it trimmed up more frequently too. She asked her doc and was told that it's likely hormonal changes making this happen. Look on the really bright side, many women going thru hormonal changes (not at all saying that you are ) end up with thinning hair which can be equally difficult to deal with.  Viva la thick hair !!  lol

I'll give anybody 1/2 of my hair right now if I could.  Combs and barrettes don't stay in, and I've been going through meno but it was thick before, thicker now.  I always whack off the top too, sort of mullet-like... haha...

Even washing it hurts my arms it takes so long...but I'll try not to complain.  These hormonal changes, which I am going through, seem to have no effect.  No wonder my mother complained about it so much when I was younger and then had it all cut off in a pixy.  I won't cut the length though, other than trim it twice a year.

I've cut/thinned my own hair since 2003...cantcha tell ;)  Thanks ladies...

Hormones are changing daily in a woman's body. I would just be thankful it isn't the opposite. Perhaps you can donate it to locks of love. I grow my hair out every two years and donate at least 11 inches. Good luck with all your hair issues.

I've thought about that diamondstate, however it's in about 25 layers right now to keep it thinner, and Locks of Love takes only one-length hair, according to my husband's niece.

I prefer to keep the length and am trying to grow it longer, not the width.

I know that as your hair turns gray, it gets wirier, but looking at your picture, that's not your problem!

I have thin, fine hair, so I don't have any tips for you. Just the reassurance that others are jealous of your problem!

I've only ever seen this once before.

Sounds like early stage Cousin Itt Syndrome.

Onwaytozion ~ I have wirey roots that need a root job asap...lol...the box is on the counter waiting.  And it's coarse and fairly dry...have to use the mega stuff and leave it in.

ROFLMAO RAF  OK, call me Cousin Itt then :P  Hubs is bald as a donut, but long in back..trying to keep his Hippy Hair.

I'd still like to know what causes this or why???  Ok, and yes ppl point my hair out to me all the time, and have no answers.  Maybe we should just let this thread fall now, I don't need any more haters LOL.

Signed,

Cousin Itt

No hatin' just jealousin' on ya.

But I really don't think there is a real answer. No rhyme or reason when it comes to what our hair is doing. I'm still sprouting chest hair at 47 which freaks me out.

Consider it a sign of good health.

That is hilarious, uncle fester  lololol.  And yes, I agree that it is a sign of good health and good for you. Just as long as you're hair isn't growing say on the bottom of your feet, now that would be kinda strange ;)

Hey, Itt!

I have pretty thick hair, but it doesn't hurt my head or arms. I shed everywhere and my brush has to be cleaned out two or three times when I brush it when my hair is long (that's why it's not).

Well, I guess our Misters are a little different! Your DH has hippy hair in the back, but my husband grows out his "tuft" because I requested it! There was only one place on the top of his head where his hair still grew. People always say: "You missed a spot shaving your head." Sometimes they made him cut it off in the Army. It's pretty thin, but I get sad if it accidentally gets shaved off! ha ha ha one day we will dye it purple or something.

My DH is part sasquatch... he is hairy all over.

Nancy, why dont you grow it out in the winter and donate to locks of love, I think that is a great idea and since you can grow it why not. Perhaps you can get them to do a cousin Itt type of wig for the recipient :-)

Agreed!  I see women who are older and have to poof their hair to cover up bald spots.  I have thick hair and hope it stays thick forever!  I don't mind having to thin it out considering the alternative :)  But I only get mine thinned out twice a year when I get my hair cut.

Ok, well just so you know, Uncle Fester is now LURCH~!  And ApriBambino, I think he does have hair between his toes or something weird, I've never seen it, just sayin'...

Pitcherday, that would be so cool to die your DH's tuft purple.  Just do it when he's asleep....shhhh, EYE won't tell.  I've often told hubs to just shave what's left of his off in back, so I can see if he looks like Telly or Vin, but he won't do it LOL.    That's good that you have thick hair too.  Mine being long and it still being summer (at least today) with AWFUL humidity, I threaten to cut it off alot, but since my mom made me have a pixy after my dad passed when I was 7, I have a complex against short hair, at least for me.  It looks great on everyone else but me, I think anyways.

Tara ~ I've considered donating it (see previous post above) but they need all one length, and it's in at least 2 dozen layers, that's how I thin it, I just layer it.  Sometimes I mess it up, but you know what they say?  "What's the difference between a bad hair cut and a good hair cut?  Two weeks."  So it was trial and error in the beginning, and in the past 6+ years, think of the $$ I've saved...they never thinned it enough in hair cut places anyways, and they always cut too much off the length.  I'd go in, say thin it heavily, cut 1/4" inch off the bottom and come out with 2 inches off the length and still wide hair...lol..

My husband is hairy all over besides his donut head, I wonder if he's part Sasquatch...mmm...I know he's French, maybe that's it :)

Vivasuzi ~ Good that yours is thick too.  Even better if it's thick and you live in Michigan, not Texas.

Thanks ya'll ~ is Lurch somewhere in the building??  or did he take off for that silly job again?  (Lurch is RustAddsFlavor, my Houston buddy for those who may not know)

;) Cousin Itt, out for now...

Your hair looks gorgeous, but I know what you mean about it being so heavy.  I also have thick hair but it is not getting thicker as I age!  I just cut about four inches off two weeks ago and it is still below my shoulders.  I hope you find a way to stay cool-- thats annoying during the hormonal years.  Good luck!
