Head & Shoulders Classic Clean Shampoo —

Even attending Scalp School, a series of video shorts at www.headandshoulders.com, couldn't convince me that Head and Shoulders Classic, the best-selling dandruff shampoo in the U.S., is right for me.

I know from experience that this product simply won't work for hard-core seborrheic dermatitis with itchies so bad you want to pull your hair out by the roots.

Dr. James R. Schwartz, PhD, a Research Fellow at Procter and Gamble did his mightiest for the Company, but, unfortunately, I still believe in some of the Myths he tried to dispel.  For example: "You should use a regular conditioner after you use a dandruff shampoo."

Great!  If you've got itchies and a lot of hair, this might work.  But conditioners of any sort are a real no-no for people with skinny hair.  They belong to a kind of "How to Make Your Hair Disappear School".  And they also make my scalp itch more!

Schwartz was right-on about "emotional issues associated with scalp problems" (that's the part where I tear my hair out), and I love his "You molt everyday" comment, because seborrheic dermatitis never does give up.

The Active Ingredient in Classic Clean is Pyrithione zinc 1%, an often-used Active in many dandruff shampoos.  Among the Inactive Ingredients of Head and Shoulders Classic are the infamous Sodium Lauryth Sulfate and Sodium Lauryl Sulfate.

These surfactants ( the detergent-like agents which allow liquids to foam) can irritate the skin of hyper-sensitive types.  In tender flowers like me that means making an irritable scalp condition even more irritable.  (FYO: The lauryls, when used in toothpaste are known to produce canker sores.  These are not nice ingredients!)

Classic Clean is popular for a reason.  It helps people with mild or moderate dandruff.  And, as Dr. Schwartz advises, if it works for you, stick with it.

Your flakey and or itchy condition ain't goin' nowhere no time in this life.

Great review! Here's wishing you better itch-free days. Why should our crowning glory cause us so much grief?

I just received a sample each of the shampoo and conditioner in the mail and although I don't have much dandruff, I was going to -- what the heck -- give them a whirl. Now I'm gonna rethink that! Thanks for another great heads (and shoulders!) up!
