I take the time to do a lot of research when it comes to travel. I had to find an affordable flight to get our daughter over to Hilo back in August to got off to college. I used all of the tools out there like Priceline etc. along with going directly through the actual airline sites. By far Hawaiian Air was the least expensive airline over from CA. She had more luggage than a typical traveler due to going off to school & with all of the extra fees the airlines are charging everyone, Hawaiian was still less expensive in that area too. We lucked out at the ticket counter, the ticketing agent realized she was going over to start college & took pity on us & didn't charge us any extra baggage fees on the flight over.
Our daughter said the flight was good & the attendants were pleasant. She did have to change planes at Honolulu & this flight was fine too. This was her first time flying by herself & she had no problems at all.
When she came back in December she did have to pay extra for the luggage but it's not as bad price wise as the other airlines. They also served lunch going over & breakfast on her flight back since she was on the red eye coming home. There was no extra fee for the food. Amazing!
Hawaiian's website is easy to navigate & it was an easy process signing her up for the frequent flyer program.
She did miss her flight out of Hilo on the return but they have many connecting flights available throughout the day so she still made her connecting flight out of Honolulu as ticketed. She wasn't charged any fee for missing the puddle jump flight from Hilo to Honolulu either.
Depending on where you are planning on flying out of in the state of CA. it pays to take the extra time to search the cities that Hawaiian flies from. Since we were taking two kids off to school, I focused on Northern Ca. in the bay area as we were dropping our son off at UOP. It was less expensive to fly out of Oakland compared to San Francisco which saved us time and money not only on the flight out of Oakland but also because we didn't have to take the time to drive over the bay to get to SFO.
For her flight home we flew her into Las Vegas, NV., as we currently live in Colorado. Again, it was less expensive flying her there than any airport in the Southern Ca. area. which saved us time & money again.
I look forward to flying Hawaiian Airlines one day myself & from our two experiences through our daughter we definitely recommend them.
