My son, who was five at the time, had seen this game on a commercial and said how much he wanted Santa to get it for him for Christmas.  I bought the Elefun game for $19.99, after all, how can Santa say no?  Unfortunately, this game was quite a let down.

The Game

This game comes in a colorful box with red lettering and a bright blue elephant on the front. Inside you will find a motorized elephant body that has a flexible, plastic four foot trunk, four butterfly nets and thirty feathery, vinyl, butterflies. Hasbro Elefun requires 4,"C" batteries which are not included.

According to the manufacturer, kids practice catching skills with a handy butterfly net, or gather butterflies where they land. Adorable baby elephant is over 4 feet tall during play!

This game is intended for children aged 3 to 6.

My Experience

My son was very excited that "Santa" brought him the game that he wanted so bad and he couldn't wait to get it out of the box to play with it. I took the game out, opened the battery compartment with a Phillips screwdriver, and inserted the batteries. I placed the butterflies into the Elefun body and then attached the plastic trunk by simply screwing it on the elephant body. The last assembly that was required was the mesh nets. They had to simply be threaded onto the plastic net holders.

Now that the prep work was completed, it was time for the fun part! I located the on/off switch on the back part of the elephant at the bottom and switched it on. The plastic trunk began to inflate and according to the instructions, the butterflies would start flying out within two minutes. My son and I were all ready with our nets for when the colorful butterflies would start flying out of the trunk. We waited, and um waited and suddenly, two butterflies popped out. TWO! My son was still excited at this point expecting a flood of butterflies to be soon coming out. The trunk wasn't fully extended, so I wiggled it around some and that did help release a few more butterflies but, it appeared that the motor/fan was just not strong enough to produce enough air pressure to push the butterflies all the way up and out of the four foot trunk. What a disappointment. I had to constantly adjust the trunk and even reach in a few times to wiggle the butterflies around so they would become airborne. My son soon lost interest and I was quite let down especially since I .. er Santa, spent a hefty $19.99 on this flop of a game.

Final Thoughts

The Hasbro Elefun game is a great concept but, unfortunately, Hasbro didn't give this game enough power to make it work to its full potential. Our expectation of this game based on the television commercials was much higher than what the game could actually produce. I really can't give this game more than a 2 star rating.

This game is lame! It takes so long to set it up and get it going, then its over in about a minute. I agree - good idea, not enough UMPH!

I had the same problem with the trunk. Our game is sitting at the top of the closet. I agree that it really was a let down, I thought it would have been a lot of fun!
