Hartz Dental Chew  —

I have a large mixed breed dog that we normally buy regular rawhide bones for.  I was at the store the other day and as I was reaching for a rawhide bone, a package of Hartz Dental Chews caught my eye.  The package contained two "sizzlin' bacon" easy to grip chew bones that remove plaque and tartar.  I liked the idea of a chewy that removed plaque and tarter so I bought a package for $3.47.

The Facts

  • Removes plaque and tartar
  • Features an easy grip design
  • Comes in a sizzlin' bacon flavor
  • Chews come in small, medium or large
  • Chews consist of natural cornstarch with no plastic fillers

My Experience

When I got these dental chews home, my dog immediately was aware that there was something in the bag for him.  It must have been the bacon flavoring that he was smelling.  I took one out of the package and the design of these chews was different than any other I have seen before.  The shape resembled a boot somewhat.  It is made this way so that your dog can put one paw over the curved piece and chew on the straight piece making it very easy to grip.  Great idea!  My dog grabbed the chewy and held it just as it was intended and began gnawing away.  I was hoping that this chew would last for about forty-five minutes or so.  I wasn't so lucky as he was done within fifteen minutes with the first one.  Wow!  I really expected this product to last longer considering it was called a chew.  This was the only negative thing that I found with the product.  Everything else was up to par and the design is one that really makes this product stand out.

My Final Viewpoint

The Hartz Dental Chew is a quality pet product that I recommend.  My dog did gobble it up quite fast but he is a pretty large dog.  I trust the Hartz brand name and believe that they came up with a unique design for these chews that is effective.  I am going with 4 stars on this one.

Mike-
Thanks for reading and commenting. Thanks for the warning about Nylabone!

My dog is a smaller dog (about 20 pounds) and so far the Dental Chew has lasted for several days of periodic chewing with only a slight signs of wear so far. Before this I had tried Freshies and Dentabone which the dog liked but lasted only a couple of days or so before being totally consumed.

Actually I first had him on a Nylabone, but I threw it away after I found out that it wasn't digestible and could possibly cause problems in rare cases.

They really need to come up with chews that look like remote controls, shoes etc. That way they can think they're chewing on the real thing.

But I thought your dog liked chewing on wood and other cool things. lol.
