A terrible ending for what had been a great series
1 star rating

fiction reader, casual reader, character-lover, reader, twenty something, a Harry Potter fanatic
Pros

wraps up a lot of plot lines

Cons
reads like bad fanfiction, bad romantic pairings, pratically destroys the previous books, drags, author's heart wasn't in it and it shows, bad characterization, bad character development, too many deaths, addition/birth of a pointless chararcter, elements that were clearly jabs at fans, the epilogue, lame ending

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows —

Doing my best to remain spoiler-free here...

I've been a huge fan of this series for years, and at one point considered J. K. Rowling one of my favorite people in the world. All that changed this summer.

I admit that I was one of the many crazy costumed geeks lining up at their local book merchant to get their book right at midnight. Having been disapointed in the last two outings, I was hoping this one would turn it all around.

It didn't.

I really hate what JK did to most of her characters, and especially how one was all but saintified and another was totally villified. I also hate how some elements (such as how one character, percieved to be gay by most fans, all of a sudden had posters of bikini girls in his room) seemed to be thrown in just to spite certain groups of fans. And there was really no point in the birth of a certain child in the book, ditto the marriage of two characters (who were ill-suited to one another and but shadows,if that, of who they were in the previous books) that produced said child. A lot of characters were killed off, many of them for no apparent reason other than to upset fans (and this after she'd long claimed that only two characters would die). Don't even get me started on the lame ending and the epilogue.

The whole thing just read like a horrendous fanfiction, so not worth staying up past midnight and paying what I did for. I will not drop any cash on the new book JK is writing, she neither needs nor deserves it.

Overall, I like the book. However, I do agree that the ending was done too hastily and left me with many questions about "what happened". I will read the book again and will do it at a slower pace. After the first six books, I thought the seventh could have ended with more information about the remaining characters. Might we see a number eight in the future? I would hope so!!

I thought this book was pretty good. I did think that she throw all that stuff in at the end as supposed closure, but it was a bunch of years all rushed into one section. Plus I hate the first character to die off. (I think "it" was the first).

I agree. I was very disappointed with this book too.
