I recently adopted two ferrets - a silver 2 lb male and a chocolate sable .75 lb female. They're both fairly young - or so I was told - so I'm figuring that they're going to grow a bit more. However, most ferret collars and harnesses seem to be made for larger ferrets. I don't have a problem getting a harness to stay on my boy (though a collar won't) but my little girl aways manages to wriggle out of everything!
I like to have a collar on them with a bell because, unfortunately, I don't have a room dedicated to them. They basically get free reign of the apartment with a few exceptions. I have the kitchen, laundry room, bathroom, daughter's bedroom, and the upstairs blocked off. With the bell collars you can hear where they are all the time.
The sound also reminds the people of the house that the ferrets are roaming free and to be careful where you step and where you sit.
Unfortunately, the collars won't stay on my little girl. And both of them decided recently that they don't like nylon strapping (the material most collars are made of) at all. So they chew on them until they fall off! And kitten collars are too big.
Out of desperation, I went on ebay and found the Happy Paws Bakery & Emporium store. A woman named Cathy owns the store and makes a whole bunch of ferret/kitten collars, harnesses, and leashes that fit ferrets of all sizes - even my tiny little girl. The collars adjust to 4 3/4 inches small which is a perfect fit. They have breakaway buckles like the kind used on cat collars. They have bells on them - just like I need. AND they also come in a variety of VERY cute colors and prints. They're not made of nylon strapping either - they're made of 4 layers of durable cotton. My babies don't even notice that they're on and they're deffinitely much more lightweight than a normal color.
My ferrets have had them on for 2 days now and neither one of them has managed to wriggle out of them - which is amazing. Usually I find 2 collars hidden in their bedding every morning.
Not to mention the fact that these collars are adorably CUTE - not ugly and plain like the usual ferret collar.
I highly recommend this ebay store: http://stores.shop.ebay.com/Happy-Paws-Bakery-and-Emporium__W0QQ_armrsZ1
The prices are fantastic - even with shipping, they're competitive with any other ferret collar out there. To save money, I suggest you buy several collars because she combines shipping!
