This movie has more to offer than just another superhero storyline.  Hancock is a sarcastic, cynical, alcoholic superhero who has amnesia and doesn’t much care how much chaos and destruction he inflicts on the population of Los Angeles in the pursuit of criminals.  This leads the citizens to resent the incredible destruction the superhero leaves in the wake of his well-intentioned deeds.

In one of his destructive feats, Hancock saves the life of PR executive Ray Embrey, who persuades him to realize that he should modify his behavior to get the public on his side.  Ray’s wife Mary isn’t sure Hancock is worth the effort.

The interesting twist comes when it turns out Mary is actually Hancock’s estranged wife who left him when she realized that a blow to his head gave him amnesia.  It turns out they both are immortal beings with superpowers who lose their powers and become mortal if they stay together.  They are the only two remaining super beings because Mary decided to leave.
