"Half Magic" by Edward Eager is about 4 children who were bored with their summer life and wished they could do something fun. One of the children named Jane finds a coin in the crack of the sidewalk and puts it in her pocket. At first she thinks it is a nickel but later the children realize it is a magical coin, only instead of granting full wishes, it only grants half. So they have to wish twice to make a whole wish. The children go on adventures with the magical coin and the story ends with a happy ending.

I did not read this book as a child, but I wish I had. Half Magic is the story of four children whose father has died, and who therefore don't get to go anywhere special for summer vacation, because their mother must work. However, a special magic charm comes along to brighten their holiday...well, half-brighten it. The children have many adventures discovering how to make their wishes work with a charm that only half-grants wishes.

The most heart-warming part of this book, though, is the sub-plot involving the children's mother. She begins to fall in love with someone, and as the children become...
