Hairspray Review Summary

Overwhelmingly, reviewers are recommending Hairspray, the film-turned-Broadway-musical-turned-film. In his first musical since Grease, John Travolta in drag is a highlight for many reviewers. With fun toe-tapping music and a storyline enlightening us about hatred, Hairspray leaves you smiling, laughing, and feeling good. While the young girls have High School Musical's Zac Efron, young boys might get bored easily. Fans of the Ricki Lake version of Hairspray might be disappointed.

OK I know that this movie does not come out for another week but I was able to see a sneak preview of it on Tuesday night.  A friend of mine got free tickets from work and took me along with him.  I honestly knew nothing about the movie or any of the songs from the musical but it… read full review »

I was a bit uncomfortable watching actor John Travolta playing a woman but, Hairspray was still very entertaining to watch.  Hairspray was originally written and directed by filmmaker John Waters in 1988.  This re-make starring John Travolta, Christopher Walkin and Queen… read full review »

Movie Reviewer, a storyteller, a John Travolta fan from the early days

I've been waiting to see Hairspray for a long time. Not one to resist a John Travolta movie, this actually has him appearing as an obese woman afraid to leave her home. I'll admit, I was madly in love with him in 6th grade, watching Welcome Back Kotter and even buying his debut album. I've of course followed his career as he took all these delightful twists and turns in it, but this role seems right on par with the others, going along with playing a slovenly angel and a dim-witted mob hit man. — — I think I was smiling and tapping my feet from the moment the movie started all the… read full review »

I was a bit surprised at how much I enjoyed Hairspray We first saw it at the theater and then bought it when it came out on DVD. — Hairspray is a story about Tracy, (Nikki Blonsky) a pudgy teenage girl who dreams of two things: being a dancer on the The Corny Collins Show (think American Bandstand) and the girlfriend of her popular schoolmate, Link (Zac Efron), who is already on the show. Tracy and her best friend, Penny (Amanda Bynes), hurry home everyday after school to catch the show. When one of the regulars unexpectedly takes a break (for 9 months LOL) Tracy sees her chance to get… read full review »

My husband and I went to go see Hairspray last night. I got a lot of grief going into the movie from my husband, (who would have preferred Harry Potter or The Simpsons) but we both walked out with a perma-smile. It was a really cute film! — Hairspray had great casting, a good storyline, and fun music. I have to admit that I didnt recall much from years past-- other than Ricki Lake was in the originial.  So, I was pleasantly suprised to see that there was a real story behind the show. And, the casting-- John Travolta in drag is enough to make you go see the film. His… read full review »

We reviewed the theater section of our Friday newspaper. Hairspray received very high marks. We relied on the review. What a disappointment. The theater was uncrowded for our show.(approximately 7:00 P.M. start) It appears that either more people preferred a later show or  others were more diligent in their research than I and selected a different movie out of the 15 showing. (I generally select a later start time too, but we thought the theater might be too crowded. Nevertheless, there is no substitute for thorough preparation and inquiry.)… read full review »

Hairspray is a fun movie that can be enjoyed by all ages.  I went to see this movie with my Mom.  The two of us just sat there and kept smiling, tapping our feet and left the theatre in such a great mood!  All of the actors outdid themselves.  I never know that some of these actors had such abilities (to act, sing and dance).  What a talented bunch!  The music just made you feel good, as well as telling a story.  I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone who needs a little pick me… read full review »

The absolute best thing about this movie was seeing John Travolta as a woman.  He did a terrific job playing the overweight mother of the main character.  Also, it was comical seeing he & Christopher Walken playing husband & wife. — With that said.....I am so glad I did not go to the theatre to see this.  I know it's a musical, but the singing!!!! OH THE SINGING!!!!!  It was probably 90% horrible singing, accompanied by a little storyline.  If it hadn't been for the fast forward button on the remote, I don't think I could have finished watching the movie. … read full review »

A musical with a moral. It's 1962 Baltimore. Tracy Turnblad (Nicki Blonsky) is an unpopular, overweight high school student with a dream: to be one of the teen dancers on the Corny Collins (James Marsden) show. — — Initially turned away because of her appearance, she still perseveres. With the help of new friends Seaweed (Elijah Kelly) and the other teens who only dance on "Negro Day," learns some new moves that land her a spot on the dance show. — — That's not enough for Tracy, though. When she learns that "Negro Day" has been canceled, she encourages a protest to… read full review »

Usually I am disappointed with movies that give so much time for hype, so when I knew about the production of "Hairspray" months before it hit theaters, I was a little cautious as to expect much more than a mediocre performance seeing as how I had no idea how well Amanda Bynes could sing and had no idea what Zac Efron as Link would bring to the table (I'm quite in the dark to the whole High School Musical phenomenon), however this cast brought an all-star performance to the silver screen and blew away any expectations I had for this movie.  Newcomer Nikki Blonsky belted her way into… read full review »

This was a great movie. It took back to the simple dances and songs. It also reminded me of the different prejudices that were out there in that time period and the many more that are out there today. The acting was great from John Travolta, Queen Latifha, Michelle Pfieffer,Christopher Walken and newcomer Nikki Blonsky as Tracey Turnblad. —     The movie talks about the day to day issues that an over weight teen girl must face. Despite her mother trying to pass on her thoughts of how an overweight person muxt stay secluded and there is no place for… read full review »

This a great  movie but it is different then the original.  This has more songs/music.  My daughter and I loved this movie but not my son or hubby.  They both said there were way to many singing songs in this movie.  So this movie is not for you if you do not like musicals. — The plot is the same as the original movie but this verision did not have the same acts/scenes as the original movie did.  I did miss the beatnicks in this verision.    I must admit that even though John Travolta gave a terrific performance I do not care… read full review »

NIkki Blonsky was an unknown who had to fill iin some heavyshoes. Loosely based on the John Waters movie you did not have to see the original to keep up, but i would encourage it. For the younger generation who loves high school musical you have Zac Effron actually singing and for the rest we get to see Travolta wear a dress and sing and dance his heart out. As long as you are a fan of musical this one is for you.  If not still give it a try if after the first 20 minutes the songs aren't in your head the the wonderful dancing acting and segegration issues are enough to keep you… read full review »

Hmmmm, I think this just might be the best musical since Funny Girl! In fact, when you consider the number of key characters in Hairspray versus Funny Girl--Hairspray's better! In Funny Girl you had Barbra and maybe a little Omar as key memorable characters. In Hairspray there is John Travolta, Queen Latifah, Michelle Pfeiffer...not to mention the perfect Tracy Turnblad, newcomer Nicky Blonsky! That part was written for her. The secondary characters were equally perfectly cast. I dare you to watch without smiling all the way through. Great story-- Great music-- Great casting...destined to be… read full review »

Don't pass up this film just because you don't like musicals. This movie has GREAT songs with funny lyrics and lots of funny lines throughout the movie. We have the soundtrack and my young children love to sing and dance to it. The only thing that might be a little weird is seeing John Travolta as a woman.  It took a while to get to used to seeing him in a dress, but that definitely added humor to the film.  It was nice to see a movie that made you feel better when you left the theatre than when you came in.  Great romantic comedy with a great… read full review »
