Hairspray Review

OK,all the hype has me going. I saw the show on Broadway this past spring and I loved the movie when I was younger. The movie overall was good, but there were several elements that were off to me. First of all, John Travolta could not have been a worse choice for the role. At least Harvey Fierstein's voice was interesting. I think part of it is that he is not a "large" person in real life. it loses some of the husky sound and movement when someone is "playing large". I don't like that Tracy never went to prison. What the heck!?! Michelle Pfeifer looked the part but certainly couldn't play it. Her main song, "Miss Baltimore Crabs" (or whatever the real title is) is supposed to be big and brassy. She was barely able to give it a puff of air let alone any vocal texture. Nikki Blonsky was very good and I enjoyed knowing that she went from Coldstone to big time Hollywood.
