I loved the original "Hairspray" and I had read that John Waters approved of this version, so I knew it would be good. I just didn't know how good. Seriously - go see it, and I mean NOW. This is a movie that I could watch 100 times, and still love it.

First off, John Travolta did a good job with his version of Edna. He put his flair into the role without ruining it. Of course he'll never be Divine, but he still did a great job.
Nikki Blonsky (the girl playing Tracy) has a phenomenal voice, is absolutely adorable, and to paraphrase Seaweed, she's got pretty good moves for a white girl. Plus, she has the range to give the role the sincerity it needed for the integration issues, and still throw herself headfirst into the campiness that is "Hairspray".
Zac Efron played Link (Tracy's love interest) and he has the most gorgeous eyes, a really good voice, and did a really good job pulling off the "campy" comedy.
Of course I've been a big fan of Queen Latifah ever since she first began as a rapper, and I love her even more as an actress. She's beautiful, smart, opinionated, and funny. Personally I love her in just about any kind of role, and this was no exception. She had more of a serious aspect to her than "Motormouth" in the original, but I cannot find one thing wrong with her portrayal or performance.

I haven't looked up the names of these actors but: Seaweed is an amazing dancer, good voice, just feels like a great guy for the role, and also not hard to look at. Penny is cute, they have her in pigtails through most of the movie like in the original, with the ever-present lollipop, and although she doesn't have the same awkwardness/goofiness about her as the girl in the original, she does have the innocence. And I give thumbs up to pretty much the whole cast.

The music is OUTSTANDING! I already bought the soundtrack. I was tapping my feet through most of the movie. The dancing is above & beyond, it makes me want to dance. And of course, like the original (and Cry-baby, another of my favorites) the over-the-top characters just make the whole thing more fun. Listen to Michelle Pfiefer's song about being Miss Baltimore Crab, and Queen Latifah's "Big, Blond & Beautiful" for the humor; and then "Come So Far (Got So Far To Go)" for the inspiration.
I can't begin to point out all the things I loved about it. If you like heartwarming movies, if you liked Cry-baby, Grease, or any of the other fun, feel-good musicals, if you just want to see John Travolta in a pink sequined dress & matching high heels - go see it.

And watch during the FIRST song for John Waters' cameo as a flasher!!
