Hairspray —
Usually I am disappointed with movies that give so much time for hype, so when I knew about the production of "Hairspray" months before it hit theaters, I was a little cautious as to expect much more than a mediocre performance seeing as how I had no idea how well Amanda Bynes could sing and had no idea what Zac Efron as Link would bring to the table (I'm quite in the dark to the whole High School Musical phenomenon), however this cast brought an all-star performance to the silver screen and blew away any expectations I had for this movie. Newcomer Nikki Blonsky belted her way into stardom and seemed to be as comfortable on screen as if she had been doing this for years. Amanda Bynes and Brittany Snow suprised me with their talent to take on a role including both acting and singing, and Zac Efron has definitely made a fan out of me for his talent in singing and acting as well (not to mention he's quite aesthetically pleasing).
The story is kept very well to the musical's as well. The racism struggle was well played out and beautifully done. "I Know Where I've Been" is probably one of the most moving parts in the movie and definitely sets this movie apart from others in its genre. It brought comedy and serious issues at hand for the time era, as well as solid amusement through the whole movie.
Overall, the only thing I was disappointed with in the movie was that Harvey Fierstein was not chosen to play the part of Edna Turnblad. Travolta did a fairly well job at playing the role, but I don't think anyone could measure up to Fierstein. Other than that, this movie is a definite A+ and a must-see!
