This was a great movie. It took back to the simple dances and songs. It also reminded me of the different prejudices that were out there in that time period and the many more that are out there today. The acting was great from John Travolta, Queen Latifha, Michelle Pfieffer,Christopher Walken and newcomer Nikki Blonsky as Tracey Turnblad.
The movie talks about the day to day issues that an over weight teen girl must face. Despite her mother trying to pass on her thoughts of how an overweight person muxt stay secluded and there is no place for an overweight woman in the world outside her apartment, Tracey sees no boundries as long as she continues to try to reach her dreams and goals.
Tracey sees all kinds of prejudices: racial, overweight, rich vs. poor, etc, etc, etc. Her friends believe in her and encourage her to go for her dreams. Her father gives that father daughter talk and to the initial disbelief of her mother believes that they have raised a child that will take the city by storm. Her mother is soon convinced that if you believe in yourself and you have the support of family, then all things are possible.
Suitable for all ages but you will have to explain to younger children the meaning behind the songs and why they did things the way they did back then. It can be a great teaching tool for those that are not afraid to embrace the pass.
