Um.... what can I say? I am a huge fan of John Waters, Divine, comedies, and movies. There are several musicals that I love, but many that drive me nuts. This one is leaning towards the latter...

Let's start with the good points:
  • Nikki Blonsky did a great job acting, singing and dancing. She didn't have the edge that Ricki Lake broght to the role, but still, fantastic job.
  • Michelle Pfeiffer's number didn't make me reach for the fast-forward button on the remote.
  • Christopher Walken is always great...
Now, the not-so-good points:

  • Firstly, John Travolta. Yeah, I buy him as a woman, as a fat woman, but NOT a fat woman from Baltimore. I grew up in Baltimore, so I am biased, but I found his bad accent distracting.
  • Secondly, I love Christopher Walken, especially in musical comedies, but his role seemed completely out of place here. The character was totally unnecessary and brought little to the story.
  • Thirdly, this "It" Boy, Zac Efron? WTH? "Look, Ma, I'm acting!" His character of Link... sigh... He's obviously in love with himself more than either Amber or Tracy.
Okay, now let's talk about the soundtrack.

This is a musical. I understand that, but does every song have to be full-blast, sell-it-to-the-nosebleeds-loud and over-orchestrated? Wow. SO bad....

All the things I loved - LOVED LOVED LOVED - about Hairspary  are missing from Hairspray the Musical. Things like the scenes between LInk and Tracy that were actually credible melodramatic romantic develpments. Things like the Penny characters interactions with her parents and her forbidden lover. The scenes with the Beatniks - GONE! The Roach dance at the Pageant - GONE! So many great bits, repalced with mediocre music numbers.

Sigh.
