Insipid but innocuous. It attempts to be cute, but juvenile

Hairspray  —

We reviewed the theater section of our Friday newspaper. Hairspray received very high marks. We relied on the review. What a disappointment. The theater was uncrowded for our show.(approximately 7:00 P.M. start) It appears that either more people preferred a later show or  others were more diligent in their research than I and selected a different movie out of the 15 showing. (I generally select a later start time too, but we thought the theater might be too crowded. Nevertheless, there is no substitute for thorough preparation and inquiry.) In my opinion, Travolta and Walken did not advance their careers in this movie. I can't remember any of the songs, so I won't be whistling them. In my judgment, Hairspray is no Sound of Music, My Fair Lady,  Phantom of the Opera, Fame, or even Grease.

Neverthless, since my first commentary (i.e., the paragraph above) I found  other  reviews that are so positive, I believe many will see Hairspray - - - and most will genuinely enjoy it. For example, I spoke with one of my sisters, whose young teenage daughter loved it. ( My sister agreed with my assessment, but she possesses the good judgment  not to rain on the parade of my niece's enthusiasm for the movie.) I am sorry for being negative; I am not a curmudgeon  but I was  bored by Hairspray, beyond what I could reasonably endure. I recommend looking elsewhere for a fun night at the movies.

QUOTH THE RAVEN...I agree with adamsmith1: I watched HAIRSPRAY on Direct TV-HBO, a couple of times (only because Christopher Walken was in it), and found the musical tediously juvenile. I just wished that the director/producers allowed Travolta and Walken more dance time. They are both GREAT hoofers...especially, song-and-tap-dance man, Walken. In his "youth", he could make kindling out of table-tops. His expose` in WEAPONS OF CHOICE was only the top of the iceberg.

Finally, a different review! I did like the movie, but it had it's low points (you can find them in my reiveiw).

Interesting.... my movie theater was packed. We could barely find a seat.
