Habitat for Humanity is a hand-up--not a hand-out. Applicants for Habitat homes are actually selected based on several criteria. Once these applicants are approved and become future homeowners, they work out some of the cost of their home with "sweat equity"--they help to build their own home and the homes of other future Habitat homeowners, along with volunteers and covenant sponsor groups. It provides the oneness of a true neighborhood - and love is in action from the foundation up!
Volunteers will have the best of time working muscles they thought they never had and sweating pools of water that comes from deep inside, leaving a feeling of goodness that they have really done something worthwhile. Volunteers on all levels of the organization help to reduce the cost of homes, along with providing services that otherwise would cost Habitat and ultimately add to the final cost of a home.
I recommend Habitat as a great place to donate your resources: money, stocks, time, skills, tools, equipment. Not only are local affiliates responsible with how they spend your money, they are cost-effective in bulding Habitat homes, yet providing the best of quality in a new home for a deserving family trying to move out of substandard/poverty housing.
Love in action - that is truly what Habitat for Humanity is!
