The T-Mobile G2 (HTC Vision/Desire Z) is a fantastic mobile device. It's hard to call it a cell phone, because lately, making calls is one of the last things the awesome devices do. The G2 is host for the Android operating system, which hasn't found a better home until this gem by HTC.

The trackpad is fantastic for input, and it bests the G1's trackball by adding extra control in selecting links/list items/etc. The keyboard is one of the best I've ever used. I'll likely always favor the G1's 5-row keyboard over every other, but the feedback and feel of the G2 keyboard is fantastic. It takes a good bit of practice, but I've become quite quick at entering text with the G2's keyboard. Entering numbers takes longer than it did with the G1, but I'm willing to make that sacrifice for the increase in processor speed.

The processor is initially clocked to 800MHz. I've rooted my phone, and when I'm doing processor intensive tasks - like playing Angry Birds - I ramp it up to 1.5GHz. It absolutely FLIES. Certain developers have implemented a kernel that allows for up to 2GHz processor speed. It's unbelievable. The phone does get quite hot at 1.5GHz though, and the battery drops much faster than at 800MHz, which is why I only ramp it up for Angry Birds sessions.

The display is gorgeous. After seeing a friend's iPhone 4, I was worried I would never like the display on anything with a lower resolution, but I was wrong. Colors are reproduced richly on the G2, and text is sharp, even at microscopic font sizes. Games look fantastic on the sharp display, and the GPU gives the games the kick they need to give a fantastic FPS rate, along with the crisp display.

Call quality is hit and miss. For the most part, calls sound fine. I call my wife on her G2, and we get mixed results, which shows that it's not the fault of the phone on the other end. WiFi calling is horrific. I thought it would be "CD" audio quality, but it's extremely choppy, and it often cuts out. I would not suggest using WiFi calling.

My main motivation for owning the G2 is its Google integration. I use Google Voice for calling/voicemail/SMS to Gmail. Going into the "Gallery" app loads all of my web albums from Picasa, without me ever having to log in or see any of the "mechanics" in the background that make it happen. The Gmail app is hands-down the main reason I have an Android phone over an iPhone. I use Gmail more than anything else on the phone, and the G2 shines when it comes to Gmail.

Overall, the G2 is a fantastic phone. If you're willing to root (hack/jailbreak) it, you'll have access to high enough processor speeds for this phone to last *well* into the next 2 years, and possibly even beyond. I signed a 2 year contract to get this (and my wife's) phone for free, and I'll happily stick with it for the tenure of the contract because of its awesome ability to impress.

My husband bought me the HTC G2 phone for Christmas...I love the touch screen and the numerous apps...The one thing I don't like is that when I am on the phone talking and I hold it between my cheek and my shoulder I accidently bump the end call button...lol...I like the fact that it goes to a black screen when you are in a call but if you move it slightly it becomes touch screen and you can end the call to easily...good apps for the kids and easy to use over all though!

This phone is a tank!

Comments about HTC Smartphone:

As the title says, this phone is built to last. Many people have issues with the way the z hinge keyboard works, but I think it works like a dream. I used this phone for about 2 years and it worked flawlessly. There is a big community following for making roms for this phone, and I pulled it out the other day to use it since my htc one x screen cracked and was surprised to see there was a 4.2 rom made for it. It is definitely not as fast as the 2.3 rom it came with, but I was surprised that it still runs current software. They keyboard is one of the best I have ever used. The screen is great for the age of the device, tho a bit dim in sunlight. On a 4g network, the speed is consistent and fast, same with wifi. The only downside I have experienced with this device is the signal drops quite a bit.

Battery Life
Lasts all day with moderate use (7-8 hours) Heavy use maybe 4 hours...replacement batteries are cheap and recommended!

Call Quality
Loud earpiece, but speakerphone quality is very bad

G2 is my Go 2 phone!

By

from Quincy, MA

Comments about HTC Smartphone:

What I like about this phone is that it has both a keyboard and touchscreen. I can text with the keyboard or with swype, and that is something a lot of phones don't have the ability to do. The screen is not too small or too big, which is a good size if you are using the GPS.

Battery Life
I have to charge my phone every day because I use the data (web), text, and call.

Display/Screen Quality
The display is clear and the screen is not too big or not too small.

Call Quality
The call quality is good, I have no problems hearing or there is no lagging sounds.

Ease of Use
It is very easy to use once you play around with it.

Durability
It's built to last quite a while for users.

Design
I love the keyboard and touchscreen ability.

HTC G2 works great

By

from Colorado Springs, CO

Comments about HTC Smartphone:

I had the G1 and worked for tmobile when that came out. I had that for over 2 years and then upgraded to the G2 after much research. I need the slide out keyboard because I suck at trying to text on the screen and I do alot of texting. The phone is fast in all areas. I am sure if you bog it down with tons of apps and stuff it may slow down but so far so good. Love this phone.

Works great other than occassional power glitches.

By

from Salt Lake City, UT

Comments about HTC Smartphone:

Really love working with my new android phone, and the G2 is a great model. The keyboard comes in and out like a charm, and don't have any problem with it "falling open" unexpectedly. I have noticed a few times where I have had to take out the battery and put it back in to get it to turn on, but that could be some slight defect in my particular phone (it could have been me who damaged, but haven't done anything too hurtful to it...) That is the only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5.

Comments about HTC Smartphone:

I love Android technology and this is a pretty awesome phone minus a few things. it freezes, my cord shorted out in 3 short months, and the top power/sleep button isnt working as well as it should. i love the voice searches and voice texts as well as the great camera and great apps on the Andriod market. Battery SUCKS though!

Great Phone; Awful Battery Life

By

from Long Island, NY

Comments about HTC Smartphone:

I've had the phone for about a month and a half now. The phone is honestly great; I can't really complain except for the battery life. I forgot my charger at my girlfriend's and could not get it for three days and the phone died on me. With the exception of the battery life, the phone is great. The flip out keyboard is great for texting and the phone itself is extremely smooth in regards to operating. The apps are a great addition as well. I love surfing the internet on it as it is very quick (comparable to the iphone). I'd say the only other kickback is that it is on t-mobile, but honestly, the phone is worth it. I love it and I think it's well worth the money and dealing with the t-mobile service.

HTC G2 - Best Phone I've Ever Owned

By

from Upland, CA

Comments about HTC Smartphone:

While shopping for a new T-Mobile smartphone, I tested out several models. I came to the conclusion that the most important features were:

1. A fast enough processor and enough memory to prevent the phone from being laggy

2. A physical keyboard rather than only an on-screen keyboard

3. 4G data capability

For anyone who finds these features important, the HTC G2 is definitely worth considering. Here's how the device does in each of these categories:

**Speed and memory, preventing lagginess**

** **The clock speed of the processor is 800 MHz. This was of some initial concern as other phones I tested had clock speeds of 1 GHz, a full 25% faster. However, using the G2 side-by-side with a 1 GHz device (HTC MyTouch 4G), the G2 has no lag whereas the other device lags noticeably. The 800 MHz processor seems to be extremely efficient, so that the lower number has no negative effect on performance. Generally speaking, the phone usually has close to 200 MB of available memory even after running for several days.

**Physical Keyboard**

The keys on the G2's keyboard are very nicely laid out and have a solid feel. The keys are large for a phone, especially in terms of width, which makes typing very easy and accurate. There is enough space between the keys to avoid hitting the wrong key or multiple keys when typing. Some users feel that the opening mechanism that allows the keyboard to be accessed feels cheap, but I find it quite solid. I think most of the complaints stem from the fact that it is a different type of mechanism than has been used on slider phone keyboards before, so it feels unfamiliar.

**4G Data**

Data speeds on the G2 are truly impressive. Compared to my previous phone (HTC MyTouch 3G) the difference is almost unbelievable. It's fast enough that I don't even need to connect to my home network via Wifi when using the phone to surf the web at home.

I realize there are many other aspects to consider when purchasing a new phone (screen size, hardware, build quality, software, weight, size, battery life, etc.), and for me this phone does very well in all those categories. But the three categories I've detailed above are the most important for my purposes. No other phone I've seen has a good enough balance of the three to suit my needs. If these features are important to you, You will enjoy using the G2.
