Got it for free, but its unreliable ...

2

Its hard for me to complain about this printer, because I got it for free as a special when I bought my laptop. However, I have never had such a bizarrely unreliable printer. Because my primary computer is a laptop, I am frequently attaching and removing the printer cable from my printer, as I go places and take the laptop with me. For some reason, the first document I print when I reattach it never prints. An undefined error message pops up in the printer manager, and all I can do is cancel the print job, then push print again. May not sound like much, but its annoying after a while. Also, I print a lot of coupons; many coupons have a limited print count, and when the printer won't print a coupon that was SENT to the printer, I lose my ability to reprint the coupon, which is frustrating. Other than that - print quality is reasonable, ink is not overly expensive, although it does seem to go through ink kind of quickly. Buying large capacity ink cartridges helps.

Best if you want a cheap printer & do not want to print photos.

Here is a riddle: how can a device that feeds off paper be environmentally friendly? HP's answer is the HP Deskjet D2660, an inexpensive color inkjet printer that makes big claims about being green. **Brain Teaser (+)** - At only fifty bucks, the HP Deskjet D2660 leaves you with plenty of green in your wallet. - Text documents print in good quality. It took 12 minutes to print out a 42-page text-heavy document that included a handful of color photos. The ink was dry as soon as I pulled it off the printer. - Once set up, it runs smoothly, and with only two buttons on the face of the printer, even technophobes can print with confidence. - With fully recyclable packaging, HP extends the green promise beyond the actual product, and the printer itself is made from 50% recycled materials. I was especially happy to see that the printer was packed with egg carton-like cardboard instead of the usual sculpted Styrofoam. - Energy Star-rated, this printer only uses between two and ten watts of power, even when it's working its hardest. - HP publishes information about their products and recycling information on their website at hp.com/ecosolutions. **Bad Joke (-)** - It took me a while to set up. Even after I installed the drivers, the printer only printed test pages, not the documents I asked it to. - Photo quality is mediocre - the colors aren't well-saturated and details aren't sharp. - Like many inkjets, the D2660 spits out pages ferociously. I left the room while printing a lengthy document and returned to a mess of papers scattered around my office. - The green features - like Smart Web Printing - are hard to find and use. I had to search HP's website for several minutes before I found any information at all about Smart Web Printing, which combines content from multiple Web pages, but not other documents, onto one page. - Unfortunately, Smart Web Printing is only compatible with Microsoft Windows and only with Internet Explorer (versions 6.0 and higher). That leaves Mac owners and Firefox users feeling blue about not being able to be green. - HP's online Eco Solutions is useful and informative, but it took me a long time to find it. **The Punch Line** The HP Deskjet D2660 is a good choice for people who don't want to spend a lot of money on a basic printer, and for those not interested in printing a lot of photos. The green features are there, you just have to be willing to look for them. The printer is available for purchase on the HP website and Amazon.
