Powerful

This HP calculator is very powerful, has a great equation solver that solves not just in numbers but for variables, is moderately easy to use, and has many features and bulit-in menus with constants, an equation library, and is expandable and programmable.

top of the line...

The HP - 50g Graphic Calculator is excellent for engineering and science (and probably some other fields) students and graduates. The capabilities of this calculator, in my estimation, is the best I have seen. I have yet to truly use all the features of the calculator and I constantly keep being amazed by its prowess. As a middle-aged engineer, I have for years stuck to the RPN (reverse-Polish-notation) way of using a calculator (started out with an HP 15C which I stil have and is still functional), and actually get bent out of shape when I see an "equal to" sign on a calculator. The HP-50G is infinitely more powerful than my old HP-15C and comes in really handy when I do not have access to a computer. I use the matrix solver and plotting capabilities almost on a daily basis. My guess is that if the longevity of the HP-50G is comparable to that of the 15C, this calculator will last me the remainder of my professional life.

speed with RPN

The HP 50g is a versatile instrument capable of preforming complex calculation in seconds with the use of RPN (reverse polish notation). This style of operation allows you to input the values that need to be calculated and then specify the operator. For example, if one wanted to calculate : (5+5-2) + (5)(2 )=18 .  you could start by entering the values 5 (hit enter) , 2 (hit enter) then hit the operator button for multiplication that will give you the value 10. now that you have one portion of the equation solved you can work on the other side of the equation . enter the values of 5 (hit enter) , 5(hit enter) and 2 (hit enter). then , as before you can input the operators hit the minus sign since your going to subtract 2 in the equation then hit the addition sign to add the resulting 3 to 5 to get 8. now the problem is almost finished the number 10 has been on the stack the whole time which i forgot to mention is the most important aspect of RPN because that's where the values are displayed. you have the ability to swap different values on the stack, also. To complete the problem hit the addition sign and the calculator will add 10+8 giving a total of 18 . Although the explanation of how this process works can take a minute to discuss you will find that the functionality this calculator offers will save you time when performing much more advance calculations such as computing complex numbers in rectangular form and polar form. These calculation will take seconds as opposed to minutes when using a TI calculator.

Best for Engineers

4

This calculator got me through my Civil Engineering degree.  It is very powerful with all the functions you could possibly need for engineering and math related fields.  Most engineering professors in my opinion are far more comfortable with HP calculators that with a Texas Instuments calculator whereas math professors and students prefer the TI.  I love reverse polish notation, which is available on this calculator but there is also the option to use regular notation,  Degrees, Minutes, and Seconds are easily accessible for angular calculation as well as decimal degrees and radians.  There are many built in formulas for physics, fluid mechanics, and thermodynamics as well as a powerful engine for building and storing your own custom equations.  The solver is fast and can handle multiple variables.  This calculator was expensive but worth the extra money versus a less powerful HP or a TI.
