As tax time approaches many people will be flooding to places like H&R Block to get their taxes done. I would like to caution anyone going to these places. Sure, they're convenient and you can even get your money early, but you could be throwing good money after bad by using them.

Did you know that the majority of H&R Block employees have only a weekend of training to become your tax preparer? Granted there are some who do this year after year as their part-time job, but think about it; do you want someone with so little training to be your connection to the IRS?

I have a personal experience to share regarding H&R Block staff. My sister, who will remain anonymous, signed up to be their representative one year. After taking a weekend class to learn the computer software (which really does most of the work) she started preparing taxes for unsuspecting people.

Now, if you know my sister, you would realize that is not a good idea. She can barely balance her own checkbook let alone do her own taxes. She said that is why she took the course; to learn how to do her own taxes. I don't know about you, but armed with that piece of information, why would you even consider giving your financial welfare over to H&R Block?

After a three month stint with H&R Block, my sister went back to her 'real' job, which has absolutely nothing to do with finance. The funny thing is; she now refuses to go to a place like H&R Block, and she does not prepare her own taxes.

My advice is to get a real accountant. One who has been in the business for a few years and most importantly; one whose only business is finance related. We have had the same accountant for 30 years and we have never been audited even with all our moving around the country. Tax laws change every year, and for most people, their situations do too. Leave it to the professionals.

In response to BayouBengal's comment from Jan 22, 2008 at 12:58PM:

don't know what h&R block office she went to, but initial training is 160 hours + skills for success training which is 36 more hours, plus she has to pass her final with 80% or better. The computer does the math, by the preparer has to know how and where to put the proper information in. In one week, no one could possibly learn how to operate the computers that are used at H & R Block. It takes more than a week just to learn the terminology that is needed to know before you can even start using the computer. You have to know what information goes on what screen, what form is used and when and why it is used, plus first year preparers are not even allowed to do anything but the simplest of returns. They are not allowed to do rentals, stocks, schedule c's, etc.
