Guinea Pigs —

Our guinea pigs were losing hair and had scabs on their bodies, they had mites.   The area vets wants $75 per pig (we had 3) to treat, and they may require 2 treatments each.  We love our little pigs but that seemed excessive.

Hours of on-line research gave may potential home remedies, the only item we could find locally was Bag Balm which can be found at Walgreens.  This is like vaseline, sticks to everything, but it really worked.  We covered them completely in this goop, put rubber roofing in the cage instead of bedding and let the mites suffocate.  The goop rubbed off over time, the mites were gone, and the scabs healed nicely.

If they would not have gotten better, we would have taken them to the vet but it for $7.99 it was worth a try.

I THINK MY PIG HAS MITES. ONE HAS FUR FALLIN OUT AND BLACK DANDRUFF. THE OTHER HAS NO SYMPTOMS BUT I'M GONNA GREASE THEM BOTH UP WITH BAG BALM TOMORROW. I HOPE IT WORKS

That sounds like a great tip! I had two guinea pigs and absolutely loved their antics. Unfortunately, I broke out in hives every time I held them.
