Okay I admit it -- I'm spoiled. Standard single-room accommodations, regardless of how nice the hotel, just don't do much for me. They make me feel slightly claustrophic. But I'm thrifty, too, which means that when I'm on the hunt for a suite-type room, I'm willing to patiently search until I find a great deal. And that's why I was thrilled with Grosvenor Suites. For the price of a three-star San Francisco hotel room, we got a very nice small apartment, complete with perfectly adequate kitchenette, decent-sized bedroom, and fairly large separate living room/dining room area. To top it off, the view of the city from our corner suite, with two walls given over to large picture windows, were panoramic, and we got free wireless internet access, a free continental breakfast, and a significant internet-only discount to boot.
I especially liked that staying here felt more like staying in an apartment than staying in a hotel. The Asian-themed decor of the living room was a nice touch given that we were only a few blocks from Chinatown. The furnishings weren't that new, but I didn't find them shabby or particularly worn. The bedroom had two comfortable double beds and not one but two closets (with a third large closet in the hallway), which made me happy as I dislike leaving suitcases out in the room. The bathroom, while on the small size, had plenty of towels and decent water pressure for the shower. The kitchen came equipped with just about anything we needed, though we didn't do a great deal of cooking in it. There was a good-sized table, a desk and chair, and an armoire with cable TV. And the whole place was neat as a pin and quiet. No musty hotel smell (you know the one I'm talking about) or sounds from adjacent units.
We were on the sixth floor, which gave us a good view of the city and also distanced us a bit from the noise of the traffic below, though the clangclang of San Francisco's famous streetcars coming up from the streets was a new sound to adjust to, I admit. Speaking of which, this place is right on one of the main routes for the streetcars, which is handy. Not quite as handy is the fact that in several directions it's a steep walk up or down to just about anywhere from the hotel. I quickly decided that a three-day transportation pass ($18) was well worth it rather than toughing out Nob Hill's terrain.
Breakfast in the first-floor breakfast room wasn't fancy, but it was at least something -- usually a choice of bagel or muffin along with juice and coffee. We found the easiest thing was to take one of the trays provided back up to our room with the basic fixings. The desk and breakfast room staff were pleasant, though I admit I didn't have a great deal of interaction with any of them other than at check-in and check-out.
The one drawback to the place is the parking -- but then, in all fairness, parking anywhere in the area is rather difficult and expensive. The first night my husband scouted out a Chinatown parking garage -- some eight blocks away -- and that wasn't exactly a bargain at $26 a day. We switched to the hotel lot (directly behind the building) on the second day and were glad we did. The hotel charged $29 a day, plus tax, with easy in-out access using our room card at an automated gate. We found that on weekend the parking was fairly tight -- one night we got the last space -- but there's another lot, apparently, that's not adjacent to the hotel. Given how centrally located we were, if we stayed here again, I'd be tempted not to have a rental car at all -- we were just stuck with one as we'd come from Sacramento and were driving on to other areas afterward.
Finally, by simply going to the hotel's website and filling out a form, we got an "online cash rebate" of $20 for the first night and $25 for each additional night. I didn't even have to show the receipt that I'd printed out for the rebate -- it was automatically deducted from our bill without my even mentioning it. The way I figure it, it just about paid for our parking.
All in all, this is a very good base in San Francisco -- excellent value for the money, and the gorgeous views give an incomparable sense of really being in the heart of things.
