Greyhounds are fantastic dogs. I first started looking into them because I was dating a fellow who was allergic to dogs, but who did not want to be seen with a poodle. Greyhounds, because they have less skin oil than other dogs, don't smell as "doggy" and allergic reactions to them can be less severe...

The greyhound makes a good family dog because they are very low maintenance and low key dogs. They are great with kids and are known to be temperamental or aggressive. They can be timid and unsure at first when being around new surroundings if it is a rescue dog, but that is something that is grown out... review »

Hundreds, maybe thousands, of greyhounds are bred and trained to run on dog tracks around the country. With the exception of being over-hormoned to avoid pregnancy while they are racing, they are treated pretty well as long as they win.

They are not pampered and they are kept in cages, for practical purposes, but as long as they can run with some chance of winning a purse, they are reasonably well treated.

When the winning stops, however, the rules change.

Perfectly beautiful, healthy, well trained, docile dogs are usually put to death, unless someone adopts them.

I won't describe or discuss the manner...

I'd like to recommend Retired Racing Greyhounds to anyone wishing to add a permanent member to their family.

Skip the hassle, mess and destruction of puppy-hood!  A retired greyhound is an adult dog in a child's mind!?!  That is to say, they come to you with no experience of the world.  They will learn and grow from all of their experiences with you.  You will see their personality emerge day by day, as they learn to play with toys, seek your approval with their silly games, give and receive affection in abundance!

So take my advice! Look up greyhounds on the web, come see them at local meet...

Theres alot to be said about this breed, and if someone was intrested..I'd very much point them to this breed. Now, some of the cons that can be listed, well..it doesnt apply to every greyhound..not even some, most or whatever. They are very...indepentant of so call cons..They arent guarddogs, 95% of really arent. "Not easy to train" hmm, neither are humans..but I believe this is totally wrong. "Aggressive to small dogs/pets" yes, some can be, some arent. My grey loves my cat and my cat loves her..so again, this con doesnt apply to the whole breed. "Not good swimmers" now this one, i'm not sure...

I have 3 greyhounds presently.  They are wonderful dogs.  I can't picture a time in my life from now on when I will not have at least one greyhound.  They like to zoom around the yard for about a minute, get their business done, then they want to come in.  I do have one who likes to bark - but he only barks to let me know he's ready to come in or that someone is in HIS yard.  They don't make great guard dogs, although they have apparently kept my house safe (all of my neighbors have had their homes broken into recently, but mine was left alone - the police officers opined that it was because... review »

I had greyhounds growing up as a child and it was one of the most loyal and loving dogs I ever had.  The down side is that they love to run and need a lot of exercise.  I don't think they make good city dogs.  They need room to stretch their long legs.  I also had a few silly people think that they were too skinny, but that was out of ignorance.  We used to run my dog Levi with mopeds.  He could run as fast as my scooter could go.  It was great.  I miss him.  He did not make a good hunting dog.  Though he loved to hunt after his retirement from racing, his legs were were too fragile for... review »

I had adopted my first greyhound from people at work that no longer wanted theirs because he was older and had cancer. He had never been a track dog. He was the best dog I had ever had. He was smart and loyal. After he passed I adopted 2 ex-track greyhounds. They are very sweet but are totally different dogs. They like to bark, dig and are very aggressive towards other dogs. They are easy to teach, they don't bother my cats and with constant reiteration follow hand and voice commands. The hardest thing to break my girl of is the digging and barking. The hardest thing to break my boy of is the aggressiveness.... review »

I've had the honor of having greyhounds in my life for the past 12 years. Prior to that, I never thought I'd be interested in a skinny headed, long legged dog, but my first greyhound made me a total convert! They are not for everyone (no one breed ever is) and you have to make the commitment to have them either on a leash or in a fenced area, but the love and joy they give are well worth it. They also tend to have a dry sense of humor! Please be sure to adopt your greyhound from a reputable greyhound rescue group. They can give you valuable insight and support

Although large, these are the greatest big dogs in the world.  My babies sleep and eat, looks for an occassional cuddle and a hug here or there. They don't whine, they never bark and they follow instruction well. They are people friendly and love children.  I talk to them as I do the children and I honestly believe they understand every word I say.  They have tons of personality and no two are alike.  Each is an individual.  They have been a GREYT addition to our family.

I think that greyhounds are very pretty dogs. I love all dogs. My only issue with greyhounds is that they  are so fragile looking. I would want to fatten them up they all look so skinny. but I know that is the way they are supposed to be. Some of the greyhounds I have met are also very timid, but they are very nice dogs.

I was brought up with Black Labs; had a few rescue dogs, and strays I found.  German Sheps and Shep mixes, a Dalmatian mix, 1 Yellow Lab.

When I had to have my Yellow Goldie put to sleep I was lost.  My husband was out of my life, I lived alone(which was a lot better than having him around...but that's another story!)  I hated coming home from work to a house with no life except African violets.

I'd worked at a local Humane Society years ago and fought against people trying to introduce greyhound racing to Pennsylvania.  I knew a little about them, but only in the context of racing and how...
