OK so here we are. Seven days since I took the cat to the vet and 21 pills later. And I'm exhausted. The first few days with the assistance of the Apothecary Pill Dispenser were pretty good. But then she got smart and started hiding from us when it was time for her P-I-L-L. Or she would hide it in her cheek like a giant chipmunk and spit them out in a later time.
I am just weary from the hunting, wrapping her in a towel, and the whole alligator death roll routine twice today. The thought of having to do all that again tonight had me pretty down so I tried something new and I'm amazed that it worked.
Last week when I bought the dispenser, I also bought a product called Pill Pockets for Cats in the salmon flavor. They are basicall sticky hollow balls of cat treat that you cram a pill into and then smoosh the treat around the pill. My cat is not a big snacker and not one to go crazy over treats so I don't know why I bought them. Now a week later I'm thinking it must have been divine intervention because just for giggles I put the little yellow antibiotic pill inside of a salmon flavored pill pocket and dropped it on the floor in front of my cat. Much to my amazement and glee she gobbled it up and asked for more. So I dropped two more on the floor (without pills hidden inside) and she ate them both. Wow.
I watched her eat all three pill pockets, waiting for the tiny yellow pill to make a return visit. I followed her over to the water dish where she slurped a great deal of fresh cold water. I followed her back into the living room where she is now curled up in her bed and sleeping happily. I obviously don't trust her but I think all is well in catland tonight. She's probably wondering why there was no drama, no spitting, no yelling, no swearing in the house tonight and why her human units are so happy. She has no idea that we won and she got her pill and didn't even know it. We won, we won, we won. Yay.
Pill Pockets are expensive. $8.99 for a resealable plastic bag that contains 45 pill pockets. Not having to hunt, chase, wrap, death roll, swear, or get the stink eye and cold shoulder from my beloved furrface - priceless. I still can't believe it and hope that it works as well tomorrow morning.
Our other cat (who has been acting like a total moron since the other cat got sick) came downstairs when she heard the bag rattling thinking it was treat time. So I gave her one and she turned her nose up at it which is odd as she's a treat hog. Strange that the non-snacky cat would like them but the snackhog was not interested.
FYI - Pill Pockets were developed by a veterinarian and don't appear to contain anything horrible for my cat. Just meat, flour, corn syrup, vitamins, and yeast.
