Green Dot - Prepaid Mastercard Review Summary

For those who like using credit cards but do not want the temptation of a large credit limit, there is one credit card you should strongly consider: Green Dot Mastercard, a prepaid Mastercard credit card. Reviews of this credit card point out the ease of use, widespread acceptability, and the fact that you control how much “credit” is available by adding exactly what you need. “Buy whatever, wherever, whenever, with Green Dot”, says one reviewer, and other reviews express similar feelings. There are some drawbacks, like the fact that there may not be enough money available when you really need it and the fact that you have to pay a small fee every time you add money. But consumers generally like this Credit Card and recommend it for those who want to develop the financial discipline that only a prepaid card can encourage.

My husband and i have a mastercard green dot card.  It is a pretty nifty little card.  You don't have to worry about over the limit charges or outrageous finance charges.  The only kickback on this card is you have to pay almost $5.oo everytime that you add more money to it, whether it is $500... review »

Green dot is the worst prepaid credit card. I have had it for over 2 years and the reloads frequently screw up. It seems like I have a problem with the money on my card every third time I use it, and then it is a MAJOR hassle because its hard to reach a real person for customer service and when you... review »

I've had my Greendot card for over a year, and its worked out fine for what I need. The other day, I went to Office Depot to make a purchase of around $30. The cashier rang me up, and I slid my card in, hit debit, and entered my pin. Declined. But I knew I had a couple hundred dollars on the card. So I tried again. Still Declined. I went home emptyhanded and checked on line. I saw two postings for Office Depot for the same roughly $30 amount listed as "pending" but not declined. I also saw that I had plenty of money to cover the amount, and couldn't understand why it had been declined....

I had the Green Dot card for about a year.  I clear about $800 per week, and my employer does not offer direct deposit.  I buy moneypaks at CVS, and they are limited to $500 per reload.  So, some weeks I do two reloads.  Because of this, they have frozen my account 3 times for making too many deposits.  They don't like to see more than one deposit per week.  They didn't even call before freezing my account.  I had to call them to find out why my card was declined.  Since the first time they froze it, I have had to deal with the same CSR each time I call, and she has accused me of criminal... review »

I got this card as a graduation present from a family member. I was only 17 when I recieved it, when I tried to activate it, It said I needed a parent to call the number. I was going to be 18 in about 2 weeks so I decided to just try again when I turned 18. I did try after my 18th birthday, but then online they could not verify it was me so I then called the number given, it took me forever to get somebody to talk to and they send I needed to send in a electricity bill a phone bill and a copy of my social security card. I told them I was only 18 and that my parents paid the bills and I didn't not...

I was very disappointed in the Customer Service, or should I say the Lack of Customer Service.  With the fees involved with this card you should at least be able to speak with a person that has knowledge of the business.  I thought this card would be great, but after trying to call them and getting the run around for more then 2 hours, I was finally told to contact Walmart where the card was purchased and see if they could help me.  What?  Its Green Dots card and they won't help me?  I then called the main office of Walmart in Bentonville, AR.  They in turn tried to call Green Dot, and what... review »

No credit? Bad credit? Not to worry with Green Dot MasterCard. You can still make those online purchases, in-store purchases and more.  I've had my Green Dot MasterCard for  about two years now & I wouldn't know what to do without it. You can put as much money as you need or want to on it & feel secure in knowing that where ever you use it, you can do so safely.  It's accepted every where that MasterCard is accepted.

For only $4.95 a month for maintenance, it's a great card to have. Add money anytime you need to, check your balance any time. Get weekly emails with your balance updates...

I buy Prepaid credit cards to use online. I have accounts with netspend, mio and a few other prepaid cards. Its been my experience they are basically all the same the activation fee and reload fees suck.. A few weeks ago I was in Walgreens and purchased a Green Dot mastercard. This card took an hour to activate. Having recieved my Mastercard in the mail I went to 3 different stores cause to reload is 4.95 noway everyone else is 2.50 the highest ive ever seen 3.95. So okay i put 45.00 expecting to have 45.00 plus paying 4.95 only to come home and wait for an hour to find out I have 40.05. Green... review »

I prefer the prepay ability of the green dot credit card, becouse, yes you have a charge of 4.95 a month and a charge of 4.95 for every amount you put on the card. But if you only place large amounts onto your card then 4.95 is not much. And if you have direct deposit you don't get charged anything.

I used to deal with bank credit cards and you were always getting hit with charges from interest to accidental overcharging.

With the green dart there is no overcharging. How can you overcharge when there is no money left on the card. And on the outside chance you do over charge you simply pay...

I wanted to get a credit card so I could buy a bunch of stuff off the internet and not worry about identity theft. When I saw that CVS had a sale on Green Dot Prepaid MasterCard's I jumped for the chance. I guessed to put money on the card it would only cost $4.95. Boy was I wrong. It costs $9.95 just to activate. After putting money on my card I expected to go home with it. Nope wrong again. I had to go home, and get on the phone to activate it. On the phone I could barely understand the Green Dot lady because of her accent. It took  8 days to arrive. So far I'm pleased with it, but wouldn't...

I wouldnt recommend Greendot to my worse enemy. I'd advise any and everyone to NEVER use it and if you do, get your money out now while you can. I started using Greendot when it first came out. Didnt use it often, just to fastly receive money from relatives in other locations. Thought it was easier and cheaper than the money transfer services. Well. I guess Greendot got greedy and desperate because 2 of my accounts and accounts from a couple of my friends, whom Id recommend to GD, got frozen. They gave nonsense reasons for taking our money. Claiming mothers maiden names didnt match, social security#...

I think the green dot program is one of the BEST ideas i have seen in a while. Especially for people that cant get a bank account. It makes it very easy to deposit your money on a card or use direct deposit.

We have used Green Dot for years, we have had not problems, except that for a long time we were able to put $900.00 on the card, then all of a sudden we could only put $500.00, we were upset, we found out that we had to upgrade to the Green Dot Supreme, well we did, and was informed that we could put $2,500.00 on the card. Well, it never happened that way. We have only been able to put no more than $800.00 on the card. The card always never lets us go over our limit that we put on the card. Until now. We paid our bills, then all of a sudden it showed that we had $374.00, our bills showed posted,...

This is a great pre-paid credit card for those who want to control their spending or are unable to get a secured credit card. My wife and I use it for everything from paying bills to online casinos ( shhhh....not supposed to do that ).  It is easy to use and can be reloaded in quite a few different places, even at the CoinStar machines at your local grocery store.
