Great Value Crispy Fried Onion Bits —

I eat a lot of salads and I am always looking for something to add to my salad.  I go with the traditional cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots but then I start adding things such as kidney beans, chic peas, mini-corn cobs; anything that will add flavor or color to a bed of lettuce and veggies.  I love bacon bits, croutons, and salad toppers so when I saw the Great Value Crispy Fried Onion Bits I knew I needed to try them.  I didn't know the product was Wal-Mart's brand name because I didn't see the name Great Value until the second time I used them.

I would expect this product to be in the same area as the salad dressings, crouton, bacon bits, and other salad toppers but they aren't.  I came across them by accident because they were in the canned vegetable aisle in the bean department.  Like the French's Fried Onions it will be difficult for me to find them because they aren't where you think they should be.

A 3.5 OZ container costs about $1.87, if that much.  There are 45 calories per serving with a serving being 2 Tbsp.  Well, I don't measure my toppings with a measuring spoon.  I just dump then on the salad.  The container is a handy flip-top dispenser.  It's easy to open and close and I like that it has a flip-top versus removable lid.

The container said, "Delicious for topping salads and sandwiches or use to add flavor to casseroles and omelets."  That sounds good to me.  I have used the Onion Bits numerous times on salads, once on a baked potato and once on a grilled cheese sandwich and I thought it added wonderful flavor to all three.

When you pour the onion bits out of the container it looks like the shavings or crumbs of an onion roll or blooming onion at a restaurant.  The Onion Bits are very crispy just as the container says but they do not have an overwhelming zesty taste.  I love onions so I would have been okay if the flavor had just a little more kick to it.

I will continue to buy GV Crispy Fried Onion Bits.  They are smaller in size than the traditional French's Fried Onions and they don't have as strong an onion flavor but they are also cheaper.  I do love the green bean casserole that calls for the French's Fried Onions and I will not cut corners with that recipe.  I will continue to use both products because the Great Value is only available at Wal-Mart but the French's is usually available at any grocery store.

The container is recyclable and I will be doing my own "recycling" by reusing it for other things.  One last thing: The product has a good shelf life.  I purchased this container at the end of February and the expiration date is 9/17/09.

I just got me an onion chopper and I love that thing! I love onions but refuse to hold them, cut them and let the tears pour out. I can't stand the stinging in my eyes and it takes forever to get the smell of onions off your hands. I have eaten green bean casserole at church functions for years but I just made it for the first time Friday. My family loved it. By the time they left I had enough for a small serving yesterday.

This sounds like the generic of the French's Fried Onions and they sound really good. We always have 2-4 cans of the French's Fried Onions in our pantry. I like making the green bean casserole and we have found a multitude of uses for the onions. Like you mentioned--they go great on salads and potatoes and I say anything that keeps me from peeling or cutting a real onion is a plus in my book! ~Anna Leigh

Oh I like onion bits a lot on salads and almost anything. I never heard of these but will look when I go to Walmart.

French's Crunchy Onion Chicken

1 1/3 cup French's Fried Onions
1 lb boneless skinless chicken breasts
1 egg, beaten

1) Crush fried onions with hands or in a bag
2) Dip chicken into egg and then coat entirely in crushed fried onions
3) Bake for 20 minutes at 400 degrees

I can and do eat chicken. Remember I told you I thought I was going to start clucking b/c I was eating so much chicken salad and chicken & dumplings.

I haven't had the recipe w/the french fried onions but I've had one w/the chicken breasts dipped in egg and then rolled in frosted flakes and Italian bread crumbs and then baked to a crisp. It sounds like a similar receipe. Please do share it with me.

That recipe sounds delicious! Onions and chicken... yum.

Sounds yummy! Can you eat chicken? I have a recipe where you dip chicken breasts in egg and then dip them in French's Fried Onions and then bake them in the oven. It is so good! The onions get all crunchy and the chicken stays moist.
