Great Value Canned Peas —

The store brands of products are usually located about as low as you can go on the shelves, but I have found that I can often save money with Great Value products. I am especially impressed that Wal-Mart has begun to label some of their store brand products, including these canned peas, as gluten freemo. I have three small children and do not like to have to spend time researching products to determine whether or not they are gluten free.

My children love peas and eat them nearly every day. They have multiple food sensitivies and GERD (reflux), so it is challenging to find foods that they enjoy that do not bother them afterwards. These peas have become a staple for us because they fit that bill.

Great Value canned peas have an average taste. They do not taste as good as home-grown fresh peas, but I am not sure if canned products can rival fresh food from the garden. The GV unsweetened canned peas has a very similar look to the packaging, but they taste REALLY bland, and we ended up adding salt (kind of defeats the purpose, I know). Sometimes I'll add a little sugar to these peas to change the flavor a bit.

Ingredients listed on the label are: peas, water, sugar, and salt.

These canned sweet peas have 70 calories and 0 grams of trans fat per serving. They contain 370mg sodium and 105mg potassium and 3 grams of dietary fiber. They do have unsalted varieties that contain much less sodium. I was surprised to see that a serving of these peas contains 20% of RDA of vitamin C. A 15 oz. can contains about 3 1/2 servings.

Great Value products usually beat brand name prices easily, but lately I have noticed that the price has increased quite a bit on these peas. Each can used to cost 50 cents, but now I believe they are selling for 62 cents around here. I can often find some of the store brands on sale for 50 cents, so I am careful to check prices before buying. I actually prefer the taste of several of the brand name peas but not enough to spend significantly more money.

Occasionally, I will find several cans in a row that contain several bad peas. Wal-Mart does guarantee this product, but I have not gone to the trouble to seek a refund when I get a can that has several bad peas. I think it would be more trouble than it is worth to seek a refund on a product that costs less than a dollar.

My Viewpoint:

Great Value canned sweet peas are economical and gluten free and have an average taste. They seem to be easy on an irritated stomach and are more convenient than growing and preparing peas from the garden.

In response to GigiandAdonai's comment from Jan 2, 2009 at 2:03AM:

I used to always go for the cheapest until I had to buy gluten free. Generics are tricky because the store sub-contracts with a manufacturer and often they do not have info on gluten handy and have to research it by contacting the manufacturer. I've called about some generic items and it's taken WEEKS to get a response regarding whether or not it is gluten free. When I saw that Wal-Mart is starting to label some of their stuff as gluten free, it was a God-send!

I love the little green peas and probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference b/w generic or name brand. I have bought them at Dollar General as well as Wal-Mart and grocery stores. I get whatever brand is the cheapest. Glad you found another product that agrees with all the sensitive people in your family ;+)
