I usually do my grocery shopping at Dillon's because I get 10 cents off a gallon of gas and with gas prices like they are I really need it. Anyway I was at Walmart filling my prescription last week and while waiting I scanned through the food section. They had a sale on their Great Value canned veggies so I figured since I was already there it really would save me some gas.

Great Value Canned Peas

At 35 cents per can for their corn, peas and green beans I loaded up my cart with a case of each and got my prescription then left the store. I had no problem with the green beans or the corn but the peas were another story all together. There are 12 cans to a case and I swear I have never seen anything like it in my life.

I opened all 12 cans and didn't have enough peas to feed myself, much less 4 people! You can probably guess how happy I was and all the nice words that came from my mouth. Faster than a speeding bullet I grabbed my phone and called the store. Seems I was not the only one that had the problem, they had been getting complaints all week long??? So why did they not pull the cans from the shelf I asked. I was told they felt it was just an isolated thing.....hmmm if people had been calling all week it is not very isolated!

I did get a refund from them but it has turned me off of buying anymore Great Value canned goods. The cans weighed the same but only because they were filled with liquid and about a fork full of peas! I won't even bother with the nutritional value of the peas as liquid has no value to me.

Bottom Line

I am a born bargain hunter and I will continue to buy store brands but I will not buy Great Value canned goods anymore. Sure it may have been a fluke but to have gotten complaints for a week on the very same product and not pull that lot # from the shelves just shows how much they really care. In fact due to a $100 parking citation I got for parking where the manager said to park, I have pulled my prescriptions from Walmart as well.

It may just be that Walmart and that manager but his lack of caring just cost them my business. They took 6 Handicap parking spots to make room for their outdoor products and that Walmart has one of the busiest pharmacies I have ever seen. Yes this is probably a rant but I feel if the manager ignores complaints then I will ignore them.

I wasn't able to find anything specific about who canned them but I did write to Walmart and gave them the lot # from the cans. I haven't gotten anything back from them as of yet but they did get a piece of my mind.....lol.......;)

Well, I've got to admit that I have had mixed feelings about BOTH WalMart (for some of their policies) AND canned peas which I hardly ever buy. It's odd -- corn and green beans seem to can beautifully but peas just seem to be too altered by the canning process and the frozen ones are so cheap and you can tell whether you getting what you should. It sounds like you were "short-counted". Please, please don't let this go by -- if there is an e-mail address or phone number anywhere on the cans for the manufacturer, please let them know. It sounds like a mechanical failure to me and if so than there may be thousands more cans out there and other people who will be cheated. Interstate Bakeries seemed genuinely grateful to me for my polite but firm e-mail addressing my short-count problem with them and they made restitution with those $5 coupons. You deserve some restitution and if they are using faulty machinery you may be saving other potential customers from problems. You're right, the store should have pulled those cans when they started getting complaints. Now you see why I have mixed feelings about Wal-Mart.

That's just it though, there are actually no store brands per say......Most all store brands are canned by major brand canneries on contract. The catch is they don't use the same quality control measures but just what the customer will pay for...Sad but true, it's all about the Benjamin's....;(

HAHAHA!!! I would've been P-ODE too. I tend to stay away from store brands when it comes to can goods because I found a grasshopper in an off-brand can of turnip greens about 3 years ago. I had bought them at Winn Dixie, so I took them back along with the grasshopper. They gave me the contact info to the company and I called but nothing ever came of it.
I'm just glad I saw it (it was rather larger) when I was pouring them in the boiler. I don't buy any brand of canned turnip greens any more. If they aint fresh from the garden.....We don't eat'em!!

Oh yes, the good news is you didn't find anything really bad in the can. I have also found that these are tasteless and baby food mushy. Try the GV frozen ones instead.

Nope no phone # I could find and in searching I found that a few different canneries actually are involved in canning for Great Value. My biggest beef is that after receiving so many complaints that they left them on the shelves!! Sure I got a refund but not for my time or gas. Never have found a can without the product inside, that has to be a long shot....so how come I can't hit the Powerball???? lmao...;)

Those are my kind of peas...don't like canned peas :). I would have been scratching my head wondering what the...
They really should have pulled them off the shelf...perhaps contacting consumer protection...That is a scam if they are not filling the cans up with real product and just using water. See if the can has a phone number too and call.

Sometimes when I am in Dollar General I will pick up their generic canned vegetables and I haven't been disppointed yet. However, in grocery stores I still tend to go after the Del Monte canned goods.
