"GREAT VALENTINES DAY GIFTS"

10 places to take that special someone on Valentines Day

ESPA

This spa so far surpasses all the others, your mate will love you forever.

One easy-to-reach ESPA is at Acqualina hotel in north Miami Beach, but there are others around the country.   You've never been pampered like this before, I promise.

Savannah, Georgia

Slip back in time with the romance of historic Savannah.  Snuggle on a horse-drawn carriage ride through the town squares, and remember the richness of the characters in "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil."   A stay at President's Quarters nets a fireplace in your room, plus an outdoor hot tub.  A most memorable destination.

Tucson, Arizona

Watch the sun set over saguaro-dotted valley from Gates Pass, west of Tucson.  So many great resorts to choose from in this city:  my personal favorites are La Paloma, and Starr Pass (which has a nightly tequila toast near the fire pits on the patio).  Take your golf clubs or tennis racquet, and be sure to save some spa time.  Foodies, start your engines.

Sanibel Island, Florida

The seashell capital of North America, tropical Sanibel Island is both romantic and relaxing.  Sunny, toasty and easy to get to (fly into Fort Myers), this friendly Gulf coast island is great for long beach walks, peddling, paddling, fishing, golf, tennis and sun-tanning.   Pack your paperbacks and sunglasses.  Fried grouper sandwich, anyone?

Oxford, Mississippi

Yes, you read that right.  This charming little burg is one hour from Memphis, and offers up its delightful town square, four-star restaurants, friendly locals, and one terrific bookstore, 365 days a year.  Bundle up and stroll through the beautiful Ole Miss campus.

Telluride, Colorado

Dogs rule this mountain town, crossing streets while traffic stops, and being called by name when on their own.  Skiing is fierce, the food is top notch, the vibe is laid-back, and star-gazing (two-legged variety) is also possible.   Telluride rocks.

Glen Ellen, California
The Gaige House is unparalleled when it comes to quiet luxury in an inn.   Tucked into the hills of tiny Glen Ellen, it offers a romantic respite from the temptations of several nearby wineries, plus 4-star dinner a short stroll down the road.   Suites are to die for.

Bar Harbor, Maine
If you like quiet beauty of a snow-blanketed rocky coast, roaring fires, and the chance to do some great cross-country skiing, head for Bar Harbor off-season.   It's beautifully quiet with all the tourists gone, and you're likely to meet locals, many of whom are artisans and shop keepers.  Pop in to Reel Pizza for great films at night, and eat a slice or two;  you'll burn it off the next day, cross-country style.  You'll practically have Bar Harbor to yourself.

Chapel Hill, North Carolina

The most romantic hotel in the country might well be Fearrington House.  Set in its own little village just outside charming Chapel Hill, the inn has mind-blowing suites (fireplaces in the bedroom, luxury baths), all sorts of luxurious extras, and a a Mobil four-star restaurant.  Nearby Pittsboro is worth a visit for art, antiques and the General Store.

Sante Fe, New Mexico

"The City Different" is made for lovers.  Its unique history, adobe architecture and blend of cultures (Spanish, Mexican, Cowboy, Indian) combine to make it the most romantic city in the country.  Browse galleries, eat chile-infused food, sit by fires, and watch New Mexico's amazing late-day light transform this magical city.  You'll always go back.

The Bottom Line:  Libby Loves Them All !

Happy Valentines Day!

Great list. Gotta agree with the inclusion of Santa Fe. It's a great little city with a village feel, that's totally walkable for romantic evening strolls. We spent our 5th anniversary there.
