The Great Smokey Mountains is one of the most beautiful places we've ever been. We went in January which we didn't realize isn't really a good time for snow up in that part of Tennesse. The locals told us it's better to come the middle part of February, so if your wanting to see snow go then.
We lucked out though, because it snowed on the second day there. Not a lot, but enough for us to see it in the mountains. We drove in the park and started up the mountain. The kids and I were like the dogs you see trying to get out the window when the car is rolling. There was so much to see, every where we looked it was gorgeous.
As we headed up the mountain it was amazing how fast the temperature was dropping. Our SUV had a display of the temperature right in the front, so we could watch it. As we started up the mountain it was around 56 degrees, by the time we make it to the top it was 12 degrees. That was the wildest thing to see the numbers dropping so fast and the scenery changing so much as we got higher and higher.
The kids and us had a blast! We got to have a snow-ball fight, make angels, and just have a lot of fun. My younger daughter and my fiance made skis out of some tree bark laying on the ground & her coat belt. They had a blast with that for well over 5 minutes. ha ha Pretty resourceful huh? Well at least if she ever has to make it on her own, I'll know she'll have fun. ha ha
The worse part was when we got to the top of the mountain and I had to pee. They had a bathroom so I went inside. That was the coldest weirdest place in the world. There were no toilet seats, just steel toilets, no doors and no running water. They did have this foam soap that you were to use, but not suppose to rinse. Also it was so cold on the very top, that my camera wouldn't work right, so I didn't get any pictures looking over.
If your thinking about going and you love the outdoors , I highly suggest you do go. You won't be sorry, it's breathtaking. If you go in the warmer time of year you can hike one of the many trails they have. There's even a water fall up in the middle of the woods . The only way to get to the fall is by foot. They have maps at the information desk.
