I was really interested in seeing Gran Torino because I liked the tough character Clint Eastwood portrayed on the preview I saw on TV. It looked like a dramatic, suspenseful kind of movie that hasn't been done before, and I was right.
Walt Kowalski (Clint Eastwood) is a new widow. His wife just died and he is adjusting to life without her. Even before his wife died, Walt was a tough, negative, prejudice man who lives in a prominently Asian neighborhood. He is always complaining under his breath about his neighbors and wondering why they had to move into his neighborhood.
Lately the local gangs have been causing alot of problems in the neighborhood. In particular, Walt's Hmong neighbor, Tao has been harassed by the gang to get him to join. Tao is a quiet, introverted boy who can be pressured into doing things he wouldn't normally do. After an altercation with Walt's prized possession - his Gran Torino and Tao, Tao's strict Asian family makes him work for Walt to erase the embarrassment he has caused his family.
You slowly get to see a different side to Walt as the movie progresses. You actually begin to like him even though he is a grumpy, hateful man. The audience learns a lot about the Hmong culture, but there isn't very much character development besides a few key characters.
All in all, this movie was very dramatic and even suspenseful at times. It brought out a plethora of emotions in me. I laughed, cried, was scared and was very angry at times. I think Clint Eastwood had a fantastic performance, but some of the other actors were horribly unbelievable. I give this movie a B
