I had a chance to stay in a Melia property a year ago while on business in Cancun. The ME Cancún was recently renovated, and I was really impressed with my experience. So, when it came time for a real vacation, we took a chance on another new Melia property in Puerto Rico. Again the experience was most enjoyable. The atmosphere is a mix between Carribean, Latin and Asian fusion. The staff were great, the rooms were first rate, grounds, pools and beaches were beautiful. We also really enjoyed the food and tried to sample all the restaurants - especially the Asian Bistro.
There were some snags: reservations for the restaurants usually needed to be made well in advance, taxis to and from San Juan were expensive, and there were often lines for things such as the poolside cafe. The "ambient/techno" club feel of the lobby bar also may not be everyone's cup of tea. However, when you factor in the setting, ocean, sun, rain forest, Old San Juan, and the temperature these issues seem trivial. Overall, the experience was terrific. The quality of the service may not be in the same league as the Peninsula, Ritz or Four Seasons, but price is not as high either.
Who would likely enjoy: Couples 20s-50s, honeymooners, families; people who want to chill out versus the highly active (you can always book activities outside of the resort); people who are a little more self-reliant versus those that want 24/7 personal service. With the new PGA golf course - golfers would no doubt enjoy also (though I am not a golfer).
Who would likely dislike: Singles, over 60s? (though I am no doubt being ageist here). People who won't settle for less than Four Seasons service.
Recommendations: book a rental car in advance, there is a lot to see in Puerto Rico and taxis are just too expensive. On or before arrival, try to make reservations for the restaurants or just go early. You might want to do the same for the spa. There are also a lot of terrific restaurants nearby and in San Juan - so get out and explore. If you want privacy/quiet head away from the main pool and go the beach area past the private villas.
