I bought this for my third child. My boys used the Graco Snugride and even though my younger one stayed in it until he was almost 1, my older outgrew it at around 8 months. I wanted something that could hold the third until he was at least 1 - not so much because I hated convertible seats but because I want to be able to use the snap and go stroller because the regular Graco stroller is enormous and the boys already drag tons of stuff around. The designs are fairly plain but I hate cartoon-ish stuff anyway. If you check the toxic chemicals in car seat materials, the Gracos are less toxic than most others (although the Snugrides are better). Also, the Peg Perego and Combi infant seats only go up to 22 pounds, if that ... for the added price associated with the names, that's just a waste of money. Even the Britax ... only up to 22 for over $200 for an infant car seat. My neighbor's grandson is out of that at 4 months. Without a doubt the only infant seat I'd recommend right now.
