While I was pregnant, my sister-in-law helped me register. One thing she really pushed was the Graco travel system. She was right. It's a carseat, carseat base and stroller. If more than one parent or grandparent or babysitter is going to have the baby, I would recommend buying another base for their car, but just one worked for our family.
The carseat is adjustable as the baby grows from tiny infant to bigger baby. If your child falls sleep in the car, simply take out the carseat from the car base and snap it into the stroller. We also use the travel system if we are going out to eat and know they won't have a car seat sling. We don't want to put our child on the floor and sometimes putting the seat on the table isn't a good idea.
The stroller is compactable and fits easily into the trunk. It's very easy to open and collapse with a twist of the handle and a tilt forward or backward.
Our baby is still little and is just beginning to sit up, so we have yet to use just the stroller, but I know it will be great.
I hope this gives you an idea of the travel system. I can't imagine having a baby without one.
Oh, for safety purposes, remember to place the carseat in the backseat facing backward and if possible, in the very middle of the backseat. We went to our local fire department for them to install the base.
