I mentioned in another review that I had found a rare sale on Gorton's products and also had been able to use a manufacturer's coupon. This coupon was for 75 cents off of two items so in addition to Gorton's Grilled Fillets with Lemon Butter Sauce, I also purchased Gorton's Grilled Salmon. The package contained two square fillets of wild salmon, each weighing about 3 ounces. Again, we have the phenomena of the fish being drowned in Lemon Butter Sauce but I must admit that it was delicious. The fillets weren't stuck together which meant that one could be removed and the other easily saved for another meal.
STATS:
Prominent on the back package label is the information that each fillet contains 410 mg. Omega-3. In addition, each fillet (or serving) also has 100 calories with 25 calories from fat. There are three grams total fat, half a gram saturated fat, zero trans fat, one gram polyunsaturated fat, one and a half grams of monounsaturated fat, 35 mg. cholesterol, 270 mg. sodium, 260 mg. potassium, two grams total carbs, one gram sugars, 15 grams protein, and 2% (D.V.) each Iron and Calcium.
TASTE TIP:
I made a rather festive dinner out of the first fillet by pairing it with Smart Ones Ravioli Florentine and a bunch of green grapes for dessert. The other made a rather sparse but nice hot filling for a sandwich made of whole grain toast spread thinly with Hellmann's Light Mayonnaise.
THE BOTTOM LINE:
I hate to sound like a whiner but this is going to be another case where I am giving a really nice product only three stars because it is flagrantly, prohibitively expensive. The regular price for Gorton's Grilled Salmon is $5.99 (six dollars!) for two little 3 oz. fillets -- about a dollar an ounce for fish which is nice but not what I would consider to be a premium item. Somebody knows that this is too much to charge for this item but they are doing it because someone else is willing to pay for it.
I'm not a cheapskate and I realize that sometimes expensive things are worth the investment. On the other hand, sometimes you just have to draw a line in the sand and say: "That's too much for that -- I'm not going to pay it." If enough of us did that, maybe it would make a difference because if there is one thing which history has taught us, it is the power of the organized boycott. I'll fire the opening shot here by not recommending Gorton's Grilled Salmon.
