I found a "sale" on Gorton's Seafood Products last week and decided to indulge myself in what has become a wildly expensive brand. One of the things I decided to try was Gorton's Grilled Fillets with Lemon Butter which consists of two small pieces of fine white pollock unfortunately doused with a lemon butter sauce which I could have done without. I'm used to baking fish with just a little extra virgin olive oil on top, which in my opinion is infinitely better. In addition, it appears that this Lemon Butter Sauce may be the source of the lofty cholesterol content and a list of ingredients (including many ominous ones which I could not pronounce) which seemed to go on and on. Now that I had gone for the bait, however, I decided to forge ahead and test the waters.
The pieces of fish were packaged in one plastic wrap container but were not stuck together so it was easy to remove one and save the other one for later. It took a little more than three minutes to microwave one fillet.
STATS:
Each package contains two fillets (or servings) each consisting of 100 calories and 25 calories from fat. There are three grams total fat, half a gram saturated fat, zero trans fat, one gram polyunsaturated fat, one and a half grams monounsaturated fat, 75 mg. cholesterol, 320 mg. sodium, 340 mg. potassium, one gram carbs, 17 grams protein, and 2% (D.V.) each Calcium and Iron.
TASTE TIP:
I noticed that in the heating process, some of the butter sauce ran off the fish and turned a nice golden brown color. After moving the fish onto my dinner plate, I poured a little ReaLemon Juice into this browned butter which made a couple tablespoons of lovely sauce to garnish a scoop of mashed potatoes with. I also had some steamed corn as an additional side dish. Altogether it was a nice dinner, but ...
THE BOTTOM LINE:
This is a strange situation because -- even with the Lemon Butter Sauce factored in -- this is a lovely product. Gorton's has done a good job with this item and so it is sad for me to say that I don't recommend that you buy this. It is just too expensive. I realize that the cost of doing business is high today but I think manufacturers may have to consider the fact that most people just can't afford to pay the regular price of $3.99 (four dollars!) for two little pieces of fish which are not much bigger than decks of playing cards. You can get better deals on fish at Trader Joe's, Sam's Club, local supermarkets gallantly trying to hold back prices, or even Market Day (if you have that in your area). I am a single person who only has to feed myself but I would have never touched a Gorton's product if it hadn't been on sale and if I hadn't had a good manufacturer's coupon to use.
