I can walk into a bookstore for one book and easily emerge with a heavy load of several books but my wallet significantly lightened due to the prices. So one of my new year's resolutions this year is to stop buying full price books and to use my local library more often. As a result, I'm saving lots of money, getting something back from the thousands in property taxes I pay, and I'm finding some really great books that I would not normally have read. My library has a list of suggested books for different age groups, genders, and interests so I checked out a few of the books they suggested. One of them was Good In Bed by Jennifer Weiner which was one of the books on the "20-something and older" list. It was a very enjoyable read and I recommend it.

Good In Bed is about Candace (Cannie) Shapiro, a 28-year-old reporter for the Philadelphia Examiner who recently broke up with Bruce, her boyfriend of three years and a fellow writer. A few months after the break-up she is flabbergasted to find that he has become employed by a magazine called Moxie and is writing a series of articles which include intimate details of their intimate moments and publicly humiliates her by writing multiple articles about "loving a larger woman" and how shocking it was for him to find out that she weighs more than he. Cannie is already self-conscious, self-deprecating, and suffering from abandonment issues so these blows to her emotions are almost more than she can bear. But Cannie stays strong for herself and those around her and ultimately makes peace with her life situations and comes out on top.

When I read the blurb about this book on my library's website I thought it sounded like a light, funny read and it was, but there was a lot more to it than I originally thought. Good In Bed was funny, the characters were likable, Cannie is very likable, and it made it very easy to take her side and relate to some of what she went thru in this book with regard to abandonment and body and worry issues. Although a few of the situations in the book were a little far-fetched, I enjoyed it very much and related to Cannie's body, work, and worry issues.

4 stars - Good In Bed was funny in a Bridget Jones' Diary kind of way and I could totally relate to the main character.  I found myself taking her side, cheering her on, and hoping she could rise above it all.  I never thought this book that I considered light reading would be so inspirational but it really was.  It was good to see the big girl get ahead and come out on top.

I love this book and have read it several times, but I always like to read other people's take on it. I can't wait to read the sequel that came out a couple weeks ago. (And I agree with your hurrah for the big girl coming out on top!)

I also enjoyed this book. I don't read a lot of fiction, but occasionally a title will grab my attention. Not a twenty-something by any means (52 - yikes!) I still related to Cannie's angst. And, yes, yes, yes about using the library. What a great place to lose yourself just browsing and discovering! I also love used book stores. I collect bios about presidents, notable women in history, and American first ladies, and have found some great previously-owned volumes.

I don't normally read fiction, but there is something appealing about this book's title.

I agree with Jolie, the book title alone is irresistible. I however admit to being cheap, and using the library where I can check out for free and purchase for $1.00 or less.

I am soooo with you about putting my tax dollars to work. :) I borrow books from the library all the time (and music and DVDs too!!) This sounds like a great book. I will have to check it out. Though, I did chuckle at the name.

Love the idea of a character who is relatable.
