Personally, I have a preference to use a coffemaker that does not have a hot plate, as was my last coffeemaker (an Oster with carafe), but still do not allow the hotplate to remain on for long: I make a full pot and then fill a large (glass lined) thermos with the coffee.
The only other issues I have with this coffeemaker is that the area for which to pour the water is somewhat small, as I pour water from a gallon jug (bottled water) and therefore becomes awkward, but recently purchased a new funnel specifically for pouring the water into the coffeemaker. Also, with the water level gage being on the same side of the coffeemaker as where the water is added, its harder to keep an eye on the level while pouring the water in.
