Get Smart —

When I saw that Steve Carell was going to star in the comedy Get Smart, I was excited.  I was even more excited to see Anne Hathaway and Dwayne Johnson (the Rock) would also be starring.  Furthermore, my friends saw it last week and said it was really good.  So I went in expecting a lot.  Steve Carell usually makes me laugh a lot.  Anne Hathaway has been great in every movie I've seen, and Dwayne Johnson usually can make me laugh and do action at the same time.

Get Smart, based on the 1965 TV series of the same name, follows Maxwell Smart, an analyst at the US Spy Agency called Control.  He tried year after year to pass the test to be promoted to agent, but somehow failed everytime.  He's a super analyst, but he really wants to be an agent.  When Control is compromised, and all the agents identities are leaked out, the chief has no choice but to finally give Maxwell Smart his new position as Agent 86.

While Max is good at the analyzing part of it, he's sometimes quite clumsy and semi-naive when it comes to being an agent.  Paired with Agent 99 (Anne Hathaway) he's out to figure out what the crime organization KAOS is up to and stop them before anything bad happens.

A lot of the funniest parts were already on the commercials.  These parts still made me laugh during the movie, but I already knew they were coming so I didn't laugh as hard as I probably would have.  There were still some laughs besides those I had already seen, but they were just mild laughs and more "cute" then funny.  I had expected it to be hilarious and non-stop laughs, which is why I was slightly disappointed.

However it was still very good and I still can say I enjoyed it a lot.  Carell was perfect for the part since he is able to keep a straight face even with all the silly things he is doing.  Hathaway is still just as good as always because she is a very likable person and was able to balance Carell very well.

We were happy to see some other recognizable people such as:

Terry Crews from White Chicks played another agent and he always gives us laughs.
Masi Oka from Heroes played a gadget genius and he added to the film.
James Caan from Elf and Las Vegas played the president and gave some more humor as well.

Overall I enjoyed it and I would recommend it to all fans of Get Smart.  I used to watch reruns of the show on Nick at Night and I think Carell really did the show justice.  The gadgets they invented worked well for "coolness" as well as for laughs.  I'd recommend it to kids also because they should enjoy the silly antics of Maxwell Smart.  The only people who may not like it are those who just don't like the Get Smart series!  Otherwise, I found it to be cute and I think a lot of people can enjoy this.

It would be fine as a rental, there weren't many special effects.

Great review. I was curious about seeing this one. I'm thinking based on your take on it, I'm gonna see it, but going to wait until it's on DVD instead of paying theatre prices.

I hate when all the good parts are shown on the commercials! I love the cast in this movie and think I am going to see it soon.

Yep it was. My husband says he thought it was "really good" so I think he would give it 5 stars but I still say 4.
