General Mills - Fiber One Oats & Chocolate Chewy Bars —

Grandma used to say, "Eat more roughage!", I replied, "When Little Debbies get more roughage, I'll be eating more!".  Mom didn't say anything, she had a mouth full of Hershey's Kisses.  Anyway, I've known for a long time I need more fiber in my diet.  If you are like me, and Lord help you if you are, you have a hard time finding things you LIKE to eat containing the fiber you need.

I read somewhere (I'm pretty sure it wasn't Entertainment Weekly), but I can't remember where, we need about 30 grams of fiber a day and most of us don't get it. Fiber is one of the best nutrients we eat the least.  Why? Because it's typically found in nuts, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans.  When's the last time you had any of those things?  Not much of that in your Quarter-pounder with cheese value meal, huh?

Medical experts say most Americans get only 10-15 grams of fiber a day, but need 25-35.  Fiber has several health benefits a lot of us are missing out on.  Of course everyone knows fiber makes us less likely to be constipated.  But did you know it can lower your cholesterol and slow digestion, which, in turn will help you eat less?  Yep, and it might also be helpful in keeping us at a healthy Body Mass Index, help prevent colon cancer, and even reduce the risk of type 2 Diabetes. (My information comes from WebMD, by the way, not off the top of my hairless head)

Problem is, the things with the most fiber are the things we tend to eat least.  Well, General Mills knows this and has decided to try and profit from it with a great tasting snack.  Hence, we now have available to us, on the cereal aisle, Fiber One Chewy Bars. (GM also makes a Fiber One cereal, which is great tasting, but that's another review).  I've been buying the Oats and Chocolate flavor for sometime now, and I have to say, it's like eating freakin' candy that's good for you! I KNOW!

General Mills Fiber One Chewy Bars taste a little like a granola bar but don't have the excessive "oilyness" that comes with some of those.  They have a sweet, chocolaty taste and the consistency of a Rice Krispies square.  My only problem with these is they are not really cheap and I'm tempted to eat more than one at a time.

Here's what's in 'em:

Chicory root extract, Chocolate chips with confectioners shellac, barley flakes, high maltose corn syrup, sugar, canola oil, honey, high fructose corn syrup, baking soda, peanut flour, almond flour, peanut oil, nonfat milk, cocoa and some stuff I can't pronounce.  Full nutritional information can be found at  www.fiberone.com.

As for Nutrition Facts.  They are these:

Calories 140
Total Fat 4g (including 1.5g saturated fat and Og trans fat)
Cholesterol 0 mg
Sodium 90mg
Total Carbohydrate 29g
   Dietary Fiber 9g
   Sugars 10g
Protein 2g

Each box has 5 1.4 oz bars and costs about $3.00 at Target (sorry, don't remember EXACTLY what I paid for them and it will vary by location, anyway).

Pretty much everyone in the house will eat these, including the 3 year old. Each bar contains 35% of the daily value of fiber recommended by most diet experts.  The only drawbacks are, you might be tempted to eat the whole box at once, which likely will leave you feeling very bloated and sitting on the toilet a lot.

BOTTOM LINE:

General Mills Fiber One Chewy Bars are very addictive and, more importantly, are a responsible alternative to the kinds of snacks that taste great but bring little of nutritional value to the table.  Plus, unlike Miller Lite, these bars taste great and are MORE filling.

These sound yummy & it's good to know that I can still eat Little Debbie's snacks too :)

Thank you! We would be healthy, but not dangerous. Can't be dangerous sitting on the toilet! :)

I reckon it just depends on how many BEERS you have with those nuts

kid-kansas wrote on May 27, 2008 at 10:11AM

So if I add my beer nuts to my regular diet it will be good for me? ;)
