Many years ago I was forced to go bankrupt after being diagnosed with leukemia. (And that is a whole other insurance nightmare) I dropped my insurance at that time, for more than a year. When I was finally in a condition to drive, I found that everyone was now rating you according to your credit score, including my old insurance company. GEICO gave me a choice as to whether I wanted that used; well, gee...I wonder which I chose? Anyway, GEICO's price was much lower than anyone elses and, over the years, when I checked what my cost would be with several other insurances, GEICO remained the cheapest - by a long shot.
But you never really know how good an insurance is until you have to use it. In 2005, my 1992 Honda station wagon was totaled in an accident that was not my fault. This car was 13 years old but I had kept it fully insured as it was all I had. GEICO was very quick, efficient and generous; in addition, I felt like they treated me like a Queen. They made everything as easy as possible for me, and they handed me a check within days. When determining the value of my car, they took into account that I had just had alot of work done on the car because I could show them the receipts. They gave me a check for $4850 for a 13 year old car. Then they fought with State Farm (ugh, yuck, puke), who insured the other driver, until they returned my $500 deductible to me; so now I had $5350 for a 13 year old car. Yes, Honda is an excellent vehicle that holds its value, but this was still an extremely fair price for an old car.
And what happened to my policy afterward? Not a darn thing. My cost did not go up and my status with GEICO remained the same.
As for the comments below, about premiums being unfairly raised after an accident or upon renewal - I don't buy it, it's hogwash. We've all met people who don't take responsibility for their own actions. I'd be willing to bet that these people were negligent drivers and had accumulated points or been at fault in the accident, but they want to blame the insurance company. My own experience tells me that they aren't telling the WHOLE truth. GEICO is a great choice!
