Geico Review

My wife and I had been Geico customers for the better part of 20 years.  And, through all those years we found a lot to like about this company.

Customer service had always been responsive and little extras like their affordable automobile repair insurance policies had worked well for us.

But over the years I had begun to feel that their rates were becoming less competitive.  Both of us had flawless driving records and our Florida Driver's Licenses designated us a "Safe Drivers".

On more than a few occasions, usually around renewal time I suggested we shop around.  But Mrs. Xeno is nothing, if not loyal.  She wouldn't hear of it.  That is, until about three years ago when she opened the renewal letter and it struck her that our premium had crept up just a little too far.

So we shopped

In a matter of days, we had a number of quotes for considerably less than we were paying Geico.  It wasn't unusual to receive a quote for identical coverage of our two late-model cars that was $400 - $600 per year less costly.

One company who was offering us a policy for approximately $600 less, went further and recommended that we contact a subsidiary of theirs that specialized in auto insurance for teachers.  When all was said and done our savings were computed to be $814/year.

But to be fair

We decided to give Geico another crack at our business.  We faxed them the quote and asked them to either match it or explain to us why they couldn't.  Long story short, they couldn't match it.  Their explanation?  "Your new company won't be Geico".

Cute gekko or no, after almost 20 years somehow I found that explanation wanting.  We made the switch.

My Viewpoint

I can't slam Geico.  As I mentioned in opening this review our long relationship with them had been a larely positive relationship.  Maybe there is a conscious strategy to withdraw from the South Florida automobile insurance market.  Other companies have taken that path.

So, while I won't slam Geico, neither will I recommend them.  Shop around.
