Gather is primarily a community website which allows it's members to interact through articles, photos, videos and comments. As with any community, you get a wide variety of people ranging from stay at home moms to business workers. Gather is large enough that you can find a friend in nearly any interest.

Gather does a good job of enticing not just your average user but also a number of famous folks to it's site. Published writers leave articles about their new books and how you can get published. Professional chefs leave recipes and cooking tips. Medical professionals have started support groups for a number of common illnesses and disorders. There's even a well known investing company available to help you make investing decisions!

The point earning is a nice side benefit - you can earn "points" that you may later redeem for gift cards (to a decent variety of locations, which does change periodically) and dedicated members can sometimes earn cash. It does lead to some "point whoring" (posting content for the sole purpose of gain) but on the whole the community views the points system for what it is: a nice side effect.
