This notebook is a very, very nice piece of equipment, for being under $700. It comes with a GB of DDR RAM, an easy to read widescreen display, and all the basics of notebook pc's. One thing I immediately found both nice, and useful was the scroll bar on the touchpad. Simply run your finger eitherup or down the scroll, and the page, well, scrolls. It acts like the wheel on a mouse for those of you not familiar with the notebooks touchpad. It has wireless capability, a dual layer CD/DVD-R, three USB 2.0 ports and an Intel Dual Core 1.87 GhZ processor. It's not a gamer computer, nor is it excessive in any way. I bought it for school use, and outside of my own internet tinkerings and occasional recording projects, that's all it will be used ofr, ans as such, almost serves it's purpose.

The only real con is simply the Operating System. While Windows operating systems of the past were notorious memory hogs, Vista takes that concept to an entirely new level of excess. This causes problems with speed, hardware and software. Depending on what is running, or using cp cycles, the computer will slow down to a near crawl. Constant issues with video drivers and software incompatability will eventually drive a user insane.

The customer service is quite professional and curteous, as I went through one of the dreaded driver issues after running Windows update for the very first time, 20 minutes out of the box. Of course, I spent an hour and a half trying to resolve the issue myself, being a network administrator I have years of experience with troubleshooting pc's and previous versions of Windows. (I've just avoided Vista as long as possible!) When I finally gave up trying to 'roll back' to the old driver, and all attempts at uninstalling the driver were obviously useless, I went through Gateway tech support, who essentially took over my computer, and did everything I had previously done. Only it took them 4 hours to do it, and as such, they came to the exact same conclusion as I did and told me to reformat the computer. While it was a waste of time, they were freindly and tried to be helpful.

Overall, this is a great computer, it's just held back by an obviously flawed operating system. Unfortunately, rolling back to XP would void the warranty but I would still recommend this computer to anyone seeking quality and value in a pc. Hopefully Vista will improve with the induction of a Service Pack.
